Baring myself and 3 users signed in as guests why has there been 39 admissions as Google spidering the site to update it's search engine?

"Most users ever online was 43, Today at 03:11."

Why would these count as people viewing the site?

That's how VB works. It counts the number of members/guests at any time and does a simple count. When most of the search engines spider they do it relatively quickly using multiple bots on the site counting as more than one user.

We have now excluded the likes of Google in the user count [for those interested ;)]
