If you are playing in a new hall - how do you correctly choose the shuttle you should use?

the clubs I play for only use Plastics (before I get abuse for not being a "true" player because I am not using feathers - yes you know who you are) because of the cost and the standard at which mos of the club play. I prefer feathers but thems the breaks.......

finally, if we (the better players) where to start using feathers, how do we choose these and store them to ensure maximum performance/durability, I have heard rumours of airing cupboard storage etc.

You choose a shuttle and if it is too slow you buy a faster speed next time, and vice versa if required. Most people buy the middle speed of the three main options in the UK but the person selling them should be able to tell you what speed is for what type or temperature of hall.

As for storage, keep them in an intermediate temperatured room. Some people advocate steaming etc but you don't usualy need to bother with this kind of stuff.

So, yeah, as I thought. It is predominately trial and error, although I should be able to get guidance from my retailer.

You should do but if it is a muppet that works in a generic sporting goods store there is a small likleyhood of them knowing.

What shuttles are you using and what kind of hall?

Official shuttlecock feathers should weigh between 4.6grams to 6grams. Lighter feathers are slow while heavier ones are fast and those that fall in between are just that. Some players test feathers by hitting a high serve and noting where they land in the back court. You will notice that there are back markers near the doubles back service line, use those as reference when the shuttles land.

Carlton shuttles are color-coded for speed/weight. Those with red bands are heavier/aster, black bands are slow and blue bands are in between.

You dont need to stock feathers. They dont last that long and are only good for a game. If you play regularly, say 2-3x per week, a tube of 12 should not last long.

I too spend a fortune on feathers and there are better feathers out there but from my experience the RSL Ace is a good value-for-money compromise.
