There are at least 4 good players in a school. isnt there?!
This mite be a solution to getting more english stars into the world scene.

no badminton teams? We had 3, and most of the schools in our areas had them aswell. In fact i remember playing for more badminton matches of the school, than football and rugby?

Probably something to do with maximising participation, the most a badminton game can field is 4 at a time and inside a hall, the others are 20+ and outside in a field, so the space to participant ratio is higher. In other words whole classes at a time.

And also the cirriculum does not include badminton as far as I am aware

There are plenty in surrey chinese champ, I used to play for one. There is Wilson's who has won the national title 3 or 4 times, there is trinity,KCS,whitgift, glyn. They have age group from under 13-under19. try and find the surrey badminton association website and it has all the leagues. There are plenty of tournaments and matches. I played in over 70 in my school career. What school do you go to?

Think it is in some schools curriculum Phil, quite a few use either Scotstoun or Cockburn.

Altho not leagues, there is a Scottish Team Cup for schools, played by region then national finals.

Yup schools use the Cockburn and Scotstoun but badminton is only included after 4th year as part of the sports studies higher and is a straight into it course without any previous groundwork in any other years on which to build.

There was always a Renfrewshire league that I remember from school(going back a bit now) and Gryffe (sp) were always one of the better teams primarily because most of their players were coached by Bill in the Cockburn or were in his squads.

Is there still a league for schools structured like that?

Hi chinesechamp. Junior badminton is happening in Surrey, catering a wide spectrum of standards. The County website (http://www.scba.freeserve.co.uk/default.htm) doesn't give you much but at least it'll give you some contacts. There are plenty of junior clubs around as well that play in league matches.

I'm sure if you have several players who are willing to play in school matches, your PE teacher would be happy to organise something, even if they're just friendly matches against your other local schools. Failing that, contact Carol Bilton (in the contacts page on the above link) and ask her to send you some tournament forms and other info.

If you're from the south-eastern region, players play in some of the Sussex tournaments and league matches as well. There is also the annual Surrey Youth Games for the sub-county players and free coaching during that period (April - June).
