View Full Version : Death Knoll rings out for Irvine?
Loafer
21st March 2005, 12:20
I play in the Magnum Centre in Irvine on a Tuesday and Thursday night.
Is there anyone on this forum, even guests, who would be interested in coming along? we used to have a fairly healthy club with reasonable numbers and 2-3 courts available to us.
We now are falling to numbers that dont justify 2 courts let alone 3.
We DO have a team in the Troon and district league but there is no pressure to play in that if you just fancy some freindly games with a good bit of banter and social chat (pubs are VERY local afterwards) them PLEASE come down
8-10pm - Tuesday and Thursday £3.50 (£2.50 if you mention this website)
Larry
PS: if you are a guest and wish to contact me without joining this website: Firstly, Shame on you. Secondly, email me at LaurenceTampkins@hotmail.com

up till now, there's only a hundred "views" to your thread. it might take a bit of time for the thread to be read by all.

It's odd that a club in the Magnum is floundering, I thought that is where the Ayrshire racketsport development officer is based

Mr Mcbride,
could you find this out for me and confirm it either way? Our prices for courts are being driven up, we get no discount despite booking two courst twice a week for 20yrs etc etc.........
I would be keen to understand if that IS where the development office is as I would like to speak to a couple of people there.
A contact name would be even better
Larry
PS: we had six people last tuesday, I think that counts as floundering

Loafer,
The North Ayrshire racket sports development officer is based at the Magnum. He is Graeme Smith telephone number is 01292 317460.His information is on the "coach education" link of the Badminton Scotland website which includes his e-mail address.Be interesting to hear his ideas for you.

The way I see it is that it is really hard to find out about clubs in the local area, especially if you aren't living locally at the time. I was looking for a club as Loafer knows and was lucky that I noticed that Loafer was from Irvine and could ask for advice. If you take the Dundee and district example they have a wonderful website with a lot of info for the local clubs and therefore I would know who to get in touch with if I were looking for a club in that area. Considering there is a Troon and district league and I couldn't find out any info on any of the clubs in it maybe that could be a problem?
This is not a critisism merely a suggestion. :)

One of the problems we face is that the T&D league is a renegade league,
that is not to say we are all mercenaries and outlaws, just that we are NOT affiliated to BADMINTON Scotland. There are many historical reasons for this, not wanting to pay affiliation costs etc. I suspect that this might cause a
us a little problem with any support we would normally get from BS. I KNOW we are not entitled to coaching for example.....
I am trying to get a website setup and will be contact BS Ayshire councils etc to get links to the site put on THIER sites but any help from people on here would be useful. anyone got a domain hosting comapny willing to give me free space.......

Bushka thanks for your help. BUT
The information on the BS website is just that; "BullS***"
1. the email address does not exist
2. the telephone number is incorrect.
and we wonder why the involvement is not higher.
bloody ridiculous and in my opinion completely inexcusable.

Graeme is based in the Magnum though, he took over from Russell when he moved to the SBU offices taking on the national development officers role.

Well, well.
Badminton Scotland (nice name, by the way) provide a website for it's members
and all some people do is moan about it.
What about it's good points?
Go on, give it some support...

If you look at the site it is little more than a word document saved as html so it lets you move between the links, it is very basic and quite often the info is either wrong, too late to be of any use or laughable

following your discussions, i went to test drive the BS website...they don't have a forum and i didn't see a link to badders.com....may be badders.com should "exchange" a link with them. (see i have been creating a lot of work for SS)
SS, what do u think?

welcome richards. really glad to see u posted...must be very busy with your study in the medical school...so have you played badminton with Loafer?....it's really difficult to find information with the local club...just don't understand why nobody from BE, BS or BI work on that...the grass root!!!!
compilation of database is only a brainless work...just need a clerk...or voluntary student/teacher, during summer time, make a few calls...i think the cost for the compilation of the database for BoAE will be=0.00000001% of the cost of coming up with those big names BS, BE or BI.

That is correct, the site itself does not have forums although the BadmintonScotland offices are on hte end of the Cockburn Centre which was "THE" place for badminton in Scotland (In my opinion it is still better than the all other venues) before the national academy was built about 3-4 years ago.
The Cockburn centre is building a site which does have a forum in place but there is almost no content, the goal is to have it ready for the start of the new season according to centre management.

Red- I have infortunatly not had the chance to play with Loafer yet. I was meant to be playing in that club tonight but it has ben cancelled due to some snooker competition unfortunalty. So he will have to wait for the pleasure of Tuesday night instead. :p I have a little free time at the moment as I am on Easter break but have exams in 6 weeks so will have to work during this 'holiday'. So I am home with my family on the West coast at the moment... in fact only got back this afternoon.
I have been trying to get in contact with the local contact on the BS website because my fix for the week cannot wait until next Tuesday and I havent played since Monday but no answer on the phone lines. I was hoping they could point me in the direction of another club to play with at the moment. :(

The correct url is www.cockburncentre.com ; I'm working on the site just now and hope to have it fully functional with online booking (both for courts and for Scottish coaches) within the next week or so.

As for the forum, the reason there are not many posts is that the person I set up as moderator *cough* hasn't made much of a job of advertising the site to generate more traffic.

rich,
1 hohoho, update us after you play with loafer...sound really interesting
2 if there's no facilities for playing real badminton, why not put down a few posts here, hehehe....get your friends joining badders.com too.
3 when i read those contacts on the BS website, it's really substantial
4 btw, have you tried using "mind mapping" in your study? it's really good especially with those "anatomy"...many many years ago after i had switched from "normal" study method to "mind mapping", i found my grades improved with spending much less time in doing revision. my son is using the mind-mapping now and he likes it.

Kevin,
welcome to badders.com. glad to see you posted. i saw that you went a long way registering in order to inform us the "r" thingy. may be Phil intentionally created/made the "r" mistake such that you needed to register for correcting.
now that i had gone through your web. and i had registered in your web too. since i'm one of the earliest 5 members registered, i considered myself as a founding member, hehehe :D :D :D

Well,
looks like Irvine is on its last legs. just waiting for the final whistle.
I will not go into details but lets just say there was not Overwhelming support coming from the raquet sports dev officer.

Well it's up to you to get Graeme on side, he is a nice guy but you have to work hard to make the club a good thing.
Approach the centre to see if they will give a discount, if not why not! Approach the local council and invite children in so you qualify for a grant as a development club. Turn the club into a coaching group so you are developing grass roots badminton and the club will thrive in the long run. Merge with another club
There are many ways to make your club viable

I agree Phil, it is up to me to get him onside, but to be honest i expected a little more than an offer to put up posters in the sports centre. I wonder if he would have put them next to the posters that are already there.
Loafer
30th March 2005, 09:45
And as far as getting a discount from the centre goes, they could book the courts we use twice over if we were not using them, so at the end of the day, there is no incentive for giving us a discount. if we folded and stopped playing they lose nothing. except putting up with our grumping and moaning, about the state of the changing rooms, court prices, surface etc. :o
Shady
30th March 2005, 09:50
We once played in a hall where they charged a premium to have the courts for a season, no discount for a guranteed booking and purchasing in bulk. what a larf!
Loafer
30th March 2005, 09:54
the club has been going well over 10yrs, twice a week, two courts. No discount and the centre is not bothered if we fold.
thanks a bunch

to top it all last night we arrived to play and found people on the court so we politelt pointed out it was 8:05 and we were due to come on. Turns out the centre double booked us!!!!
well I am totally disillusioned now. time to find some other club to play at i think.
Irvine is a waste of time
