"Chinese doubles star Fu Haifeng has clocked the fastest smash of 332 kph so far, while world number two Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark has recorded the fastest smash for a singles player at 298 kph."

That is NOTHING, they should come and time how quickly i throw a tantrum on a night I cant get my serve in!

i heard that they used microwave sensor to test the spped.

"And with womens singles shuttler Huang Sui hitting at 257 kph, tennis star Andy Roddick's world-record serve of 246 kph is some way off of badminton's blistering pace"

who said badminton is only a backcourt sports?

With respect to tennis, the Roddick serve is averaged out over the length of the serve and not just the split second after contact, the shuttle slows down very quickly, the tennis ball does not.

Still, this is good for badminton. Having some stats for people to go on will help the media coverage and if I read correctly they will have the shuttle speed on the screen when showing matches just like cricket and tennis.

would rather be hit by a shuttle at that speed than a tennis ball

But still, many believe tennis to be a faster sport and take it up over badminton!! Or in some cases adults take up badminton becuase they believe to be the easier option.

to be fair - if ure playing badders in an old church hall just pit patting back and forward to one another like many do with out moving then it is the easier option! cant get away with that in tennis really!!

The Forsaken thinks that whatever statistic you can come up with badminton will always be seen as a backyard sport played by ladies

Yes, a perceptions that will remain. I remember an american colleague of mine, finding it highly amusing that i had injured myself playing badminton and likened it to getting beaten up playing tiddlywinks....Hey forsaken, you need to revisit your signature..........

I completely agree with not being hit by a shuttle at that speed!!

I have seen other people caught and it can sting a bit (usually it has been because of their own bad choice of shot - should that mean we give them sympathy.....? :o ) One person I know got hit just below their eye and when I saw them a few days later they looked like they had been punched!

Who says badminton is a gentle sport....

A particular part of training in Danish badminton is an event rather unfortunatly called "arse" (the exact translation).

Up to 6 players play half court singles. The looser has to stand at the net facing the net. The other players then slam the shuttle at his/her rear from the back tramlines as hard as possible trying to bury the shuttle in the looser legs/backside - hence the title "arse" .

Very often produces some stinging marks and alot of laughter.

Just one of the lighter momements of Danish club badminton. (also practised by the very top players !!)

I hope you have a shuttle count afterwards Martin?
