Pensions For Olympic Medalists

Five former national Malaysian badminton players who won Olympic Medals will be assued of an income in the form of pensions for the rest of their lives beginning January next year. The five - Cheah Soon Kit, Yap Kim Hock, Rashid Sidek, Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek.

The pension scheme, renamed the "Fixed Monthly Incentive Scheme for Olympic Medallists" will reward Gold Medallists with 3000 Malaysian ringgit (dollars), Silver Medallists 1500 and Bronze Medallists 1000. In addition, the Gold Medallists will receive a lump sum of 160,000 (Malaysian dollars), the Silver Medallists will get 80,000 and the Bronze Medallists will get 40,000.

Will there be any such offer from BE to our players?

Incentive like this surely cannot be bad in order to encourage and motivate our players. BE cannot be that hard up when they can afford to waste money by other means and ways. If we start digging, skeleton will fall out of the cupboard.

How could we ensure the BE boss considers this kind of schemes? those who graduated from Oxford, Cambridge will normally don't need to worry about retirement...and it's much much much easier to get in Oxford/Cambridge than getting one of these medals

A nice throw-away line there joe

"BE cannot be that hard up when they can afford to waste money by other means and ways. If we start digging, skeletons will fall out of the cupboard"

Care to elaborate on that ?

Where was the money 'wasted'........as apposed to being spent on ideas that you personally did not agree with....which is not exacty the same thing

And what skeletons are you talking about......are these points that you 'know' happened....or things 'gathered from the grapevine'

In many sports anyone winning an olympic medal would be set for life. Kelly Holmes reportedly commands an appearance fee of £30k following her double gold. BE's task is not to provide more funds for these top players but to promote the sport so that all professional badmnton players receive a decent salary and those winning AE or World medals receive the public recognition and reward that a similar achievement in athletics or tennis would.

Not enough money available for retirment funds, I suspect.

I think "skeletons" refer to inducements to so called "best thing since sliced bread" junior players who have had support over and above their piers. In the last few years I cannot think of any juniors who have deserved their excess inducements. In my experience they always jack it in when the going gets tough. Most of the top players now who came up from the junior ranks were not these sort of players, most of them were journeymen, junior players who had acommitment to the sport rather than the inducements. Don't get me wrong, I am all in favour of paying our top atheletes good money but the status of our sport in UK dictates that this is unlikely, apart from a few.
