what? u dunno about those thnigies...really hard to believe!!!!! r u moderator of some forum, please read the 3000000 pages manual
those thingies r really a must for a forum with so many juniors around(ok, it's also good for old guys)...most of forum ppls(i mean somewhere out there) like to show off their avatar with all kinds of freaks like animals, plants, ghosts, semi-animal semi-plant, partly animal partly plant and partly robo...of course one can upload a YY racket or even a "movable" avatar
Phil, with your close relationship to SS, please help us to ask JP/SS to enable avatar, with popular demand
thanks

How do you equate 3 people out of thousands as popular?
Also they wouold use a lot of bandwidth would they not?

1 good question....sounds like u r very fucus with badminton forums only...please take a lot at more forrums especially those for the younger(junior)...some ppl keep on changing their avatar like fashion, some site will require doing a lot of "things" for the site before allowing to unload one's avatar, some site will allow changing avatar only if one achieveing certain target
2 moreover, to evaluate the popularity of avatar in this site, we really need to consult the active population...an example might illustrate: if only 3 persons vote in my family that TV is good for entertainment and want to watch 8+ hours per day, than TV is considered very very popular in my family because we have only 3 members in my family and it gets support of 100%. so vote now.
3 bandwidth...never underestimate the power of site-support...and JP

the answer, surely, is to simply limit the size of any pic. given the screen real estate that the left hand side takes up, what with Name, location karma bit, messenger systems used etc, a small gif or jpg file would not take up too much space.
I DO agree with the reading at work thing though. maybe a control could be built in, much like the ignore button, that does not load images when the page loads. should not be too tough

RKJ,
i have to say, normally i can just about keep up, but this link has me baffled. Exactly what does a thread relating to the size of audiences at the worlds have to do with the price of fish? or indeed solutions for limiting the size of avatars on badders.com?

ppls said that the avatars and/or sigs were too large that would attract "unwanted attention" during work hour when viewing the forum...some other said sigs might eat up even half a page...so if one views the forum using the method like the link does, it'll sign/avatars/background free...sounds like solving the problem

Look at racquetchat.com
They use signatures and it doesn't cause any problems.

Ohhhhhhhh I see RKJ, you wanted me to look at the display method, rather than the content of the thread. yes i see now. apologies.
Woody,
Agreed, there is no technical reason why they would cause problems. the problems are personal for the viewers. Some people dont like signatures and avatars due to the amount of screen real estste they take up. also as LML says, reading a relatively plain forum is just about excusable at work, when it is full of pictures and animations it does draw more attention to what you are doing (or, more to the point, what you are not doing!)

L,
thank you for taking the time to try understanding my point.
woody,
to be complete, i think we should have both the avarta and the sig together

Well if you get caught then you have a problem but should you not be working anyway?
