View Full Version : Plastic shuttles advice needed

Firstly, hi all. :)
Secondly, I run the badminton club at University and I'm looking to buy some plastic shuttles for club nights. We had troubles last year (and I can't for the life of me remember the name of them - Goosen maybe?) because, although they were of pretty good quality, they were pretty poor after prolonged use and fell apart very easily. I will freely admit that a lot of that is caused by the somewhat low standard of some of the players in said club - you all will know the type and indeed we have all been at that stage in our badminton lives where we can't hit a shuttle for beans and every time we do it tends to damage it... :)
So, what I'm after is this. Any kind of suggestions as to a fairly cheap plastic shuttle which is of good standard, but also, more importantly, is unlikely to fall apart after the first knock?
Any help would be greatly apreciated - I'll probably buy a few tubes and then have a quick knock with them before deciding on what to go for.
Thank you all!
Rob

what university club do you run?

HI,
having played at a number of clubs, all but one of which used badminton, I would recommend Yonex Mavis shuttles. Centralsports.co.uk have very competitive prices for them and will advise you which model to go for in terms of speed etc. they are slightly more expensive but they last a long time.

The Forsaken thinks you should name and shame the university club you run for using plastic shuttles, in my day the clubs were funded by the student union for feather use.

If the standard is not too high, (lets be honest, low enough that they manage to trash plastics is pretty low - no offence meant just using the info you gave) then whether the students are willing to pay or not, the use of feathers seems rather pointless. better that they use plastics, raise the standards of the game then offer to move to feathers for a small fee and guage the interest.
Also, Forsaken, when do we get the questionnaire?

Phew,
thank god for that. I was worried you were going to add something nonsensical that would add absolutely nothing to the thread. thank you for proving me wrong

I run my university club and can say that we waste a HUUUUUGEE amount of feather shuttles on people who to be honest, are not at the standard to use feathers. one miss hit and its gone!
Definately buying more plastics this year and making people use them!
It also makes it easier for them. Some people come along for the first time, use a feather shuttle and can't cope with the speed. They are then put off and less reluctant to come along and play again. But if they start of with plastics, they can build up their confidence and technique before moving onto feathers
(and it will save me a fortune!!!!!)

My point, in a nutshell, so eloquently explained!

The Forsaken advises that feathers be used because of the differences in flight between them and the replacement "plastics" how can you learn the game if you are not acustomed to the flight patterns of feathers?
Also notice that some plastics are faster than feathers and have a more erratic flight pattern, however it is the circumstances of the playing environment that affect these matters.

Thank you very much for the advice everyone! I will name and shame myself as running the University of Kent, Canterbury Badminton club. Although I'm not that ashamed, I'm just worried I'll say something derrogatory about BUSA and get in trouble for it. :P
If anyone else has any advice I'd be very willing to hear it. Buying time's coming up, although Mavis sounds like a good call.

Yeah Mavis 370 is your best option, thats what a use, a tend to find Mavis 300 slow and a really hate the shape and look. Was using Mavis 500 but at double the price to Mavis 370 the difference aint enough. I dont think any other makes are any good for shuttles or nefin. A gonna buy 5 dozen Mavis 370, stockin up

It may also be worth taking a look at the new Carlton F1 - centralsports have them at around the same price as the Mavis ones and apparently they are more durable so could be just what you're looking for...

Interesting,
It always suprised me that the carlton shuttle never seemed to compare to the yonex ones. anybody used these bad boys yet?

Yeah a played with Carlton they r so bad a would rather play with Yonex Plastic, they just die in the hair. A asked Steven who you all know now to pick me up some shuttles from the Cockburn Centre as he works near there a think and so he did but well a asked for 2 tubes and he got one and a asked for Yonex Mavis 370 and he gets Yonex Mavis 300, a hate the shape of them but a think they are really slow my serve was even shorter than usual
