is anyone in agreement that the game has always been guilty of a lack of imagination with a view to making badminton more appealing to the public in general?
i read yesterday that of all racket sports, badminton is the most demanding. why does the game always restrict itself to normal parameters? I believe the game requires a headhunting job to secure an individual that will totally change badmintons appeal, whether it be along Kerry Packer lines or some form of marketing whizz kid. I look on the game 20 years on and for me it still has a non-controversial, safe and dated appeal.
Badminton is a lifestyle for those that play the game, but all players and spectators have other lifestyle(s) as part of their life such as music, eating out, film and travel.
Think about it? You would think looking at the SBU website in particular that all athletes/spectators wan't to know is badminton and nothing else. It is unhealthy. No wonder sponsors remain invisible.

Ages ago BE employed a marketing man but he fell off a ladder and that was the last we saw of him. I don't know if BE do any real promotion but I agree the sport has a low profile and the spectators at tournaments are nearly all players themselves.
Squash seem to get some telly time, badminton pretty much only for the olympics and bits of the All England. Strangely enough the badminton viewing figures for the Olympics are usually very good and there is a big surge of hope that the sport is about to break through but in hasn't so far.
I suppose the job of marketing badminton should be the remit of the IBF but as it is dominated by the Asian countries they do not see the need as it is already successful out there.
Logically marketing should come from the European set-up as that is where the problem is. I don't know if they have any money or even if there is a proper European organisation.
We need a Richard Branson to get the sport noticed

Yes we need a national campaign. We also need to see it on the TV. We need to have County matches watched by sports enthusiasts from outside Badminton.
The we have to put in all i9nopertaion at club level and in the towns and villages.
Many may think that Bad Eng can do it all from Milton K. Yes, they may be able to raise the profile, but what will get it buzzing is local exposure. The membership can only be increased by peoeple taking up the sport locally... no one is going to MK for a starter lesson!
As for the face of Badminton which has been chewed over elsewhere, thye say that Gail Emms is due to pack up soon.
I can think of many worse ambassadors. Take a look at the recent coaching video which she introduces.

If you simply had badminton on BBC Grandstand every month, you would get more interest that way. Most people have Grandstand on Saturday even if they are not "watching" it and Sunday is the day that everyone sits in front of the telly all day (if your last name is Waman anyway!), so show some badminton then would boost it quite a bit.
A little help from the BBC (not just Sky Sports, cause most people don't have that), would go a long way. Maybe we should write to Points Of View!
