Well I'll be happy to pay up.......but I reckon they'll be some stick to go with it!!!

Especially if you make it to Guernsey!

NateDogg
16th January 2007, 16:03
Well due to the fact im sitting in my front room trying to convince my boss there is a job for me still, and not having a lot of luck at the moment i cant see my financial situations improving too much. However i shall be happy to take the stick if i do make it to guernsey. And by stick i mean banter-nothing else.

TheChosenOneReturns!
16th January 2007, 16:09

TheChosenOneReturns!

11 say no!

everyone else says who cares!

danbelcher
16th January 2007, 17:28
this may be a bit radical but why doesn't someone ask Smith if he is going to play the Nationals?

can we have a poll on whether someone should ask Smith if he is going to play the Nationals?

Yes we should ask him
No, we should continue debating it

TheChosenOneReturns!

i do like Polls, they are great.

I can see that i must have voted on this one but I can't remember what I wrote. Surely he would play? To be crowned National Champion

TheChosenOneReturns!
16th January 2007, 17:43
if he wants to be national champion then yes!

if he doens't think he can win, or if he is scared to lose then no!

I don't think there is a clear favourite to win the mens singles this year is there? I think perhaps Ouseph or Kidd?

Badboy
16th January 2007, 17:53
Lets hope smith isn't off at the iran open with casey so we don't have some huge thread, but if he enters he has to be the clear favourite as our only world class singles player at this point in time, but will the pressure of that get to him?

danbelcher
16th January 2007, 17:55
and he would have to be seeded 1 surely?

TheChosenOneReturns!
16th January 2007, 18:03

getting to the final would be where his nerve is tested.

Robertson & Emms beat Blair and Wallwork but it took 3 games, 21-13,16-21,21-13 at the malysian super series.

does ths close result mean robertson & emms are not certain of winning the nationals? clark and Kellogg are also in with a definite chance.

David69
18th January 2007, 13:45
You think it's that close? Comes across as quite a hammering - two games to 13. Probably went to sleep in the second.

danbelcher
18th January 2007, 14:15
i would say if it goes to 3 its fairly close yes.
winning two games in single figures would be more of a thrashing.
but like you say, he can go to sleep a bit, they call it "walkabout" don't they?

Badboy
18th January 2007, 14:18
Don't forget roebuck and Wallwork took them to three in the nationals last year, and then got hammered to 3 for their troubles, like David says, fall asleep and it costs you in this new system.

Lewisio
23rd January 2007, 13:50
Think this sums things up!

The men's singles is wide open with World No 17 Andrew Smith (Hants) not entering. Defending champion Nick Kidd (Bucks) will be up against twice former champion and last year's beaten finalist Aamir Ghaffar (Middx) while Grand Finals winner Rajiv Ouseph (Middx) and runner-up Nathan Rice (Bucks) will be in contention along with Canadian Open winner Toby Honey (Surrey).

alansd
23rd January 2007, 14:50
Is that a definate no show by Andrew Smith?

Bigdog
23rd January 2007, 14:56
Looks like it - it says so on the Badminton England website.

Does that effect his funding under this new system at all? It seems odd that he can be one of our highest funded singles players if he isn't playing the Nationals. Doesn't give a great signal to the younger players.

Who is going to be the 8th seed now after (I would presume) Kidd, Ghaffer, Ouseph, Rice, Honey, Ellis, Baxter (?).

I guess someone like White will get it - but I would have said Marritt deserves it.

alansd
23rd January 2007, 14:59
I guess someone like White will get it - but I would have said Marritt deserves it.

Simon or James though??

Unless someoen like Mark C plays then they will probably have to go straight off of the ranking list.

Bigdog
23rd January 2007, 15:03
I think Simon and James may just miss out this year - Neil probably!

Hardcastle could be another option.

alansd
23rd January 2007, 15:06
It would be a bit harsh on Neil W though to seed hardcastle above him after 1 or 2 tournaments would it not?
After him it would be Ben Beckman and then a couple of guys from up north, it wouldnt do anyone any good giving them a seeding!!

Bigdog
23rd January 2007, 15:14
Alex Marritt beat Neil in Premier B. He also just won the NE Challenger (admittedly not the strongest one ever), and he narrowly lost to Hardcastle in the final of the Yorkshire Challenger. I haven't really seen Ben Beckman recently so can't comment on him - but he would have to have come on a lot over the last year to challenge any of the previously mentioned three.

Given that they are all reasonably close I guess going off rankings is fair enough.

alansd
23rd January 2007, 15:21
It looks like I just dont know most of you guys from the north because I havent seen yourself of Alex Marritt play think that might be resolved this weekend though and only saw simon hardcastle playing doubles at the sussex elite but Ben came pretty close to beating Neil at Herts. Neil did win the Middx Challanger which had a stronger draw than the one at the weekend as well as the Herts which was only a sat but had a strong draw. Danny P, Ben B all the other guys from this area who would be in and around that 8th seed place.
I bet the organisers hope that one of the older guy come in and take the last place to save any headaches!!
What about Mark Burgess? Would he deserve that place if he played?

Bigdog
23rd January 2007, 15:31
Alex is a lot stronger than me at the moment. I am trying to get back into it and my high ranking is somewhat historic and because I play quite a lot of tournaments (I don't get to play much Badminton during the week because my job is quite demanding). I wouldn't expect (or want) a seeded position myself - but the way Alex is looking I really think he could take any of the top players on (Except perhaps Rice or Honey who would just be too consistent for him) if he gets in the right mind set. He did take Ghaffer to setting in the first end last year.

I agree that if Burgess (or Haughton!) were to enter then they could make seeding a lot easier.

As far as Northern players are concerned - there are a lot of strong youngsters coming up the ranks in Yorkshire. Jamie Bonsels will be up there in a few years - and doubles wise look out for Marcus Ellis. Mark Middleton (Younger brother of Robin) will be another top doubles player in a few years time.

I will be there at the Cambridge this weekend - trying to get some match practice for the nationals.

MS - Ouseph or Smith (if he plays)

LS - Cann (out on a limb, but she's done it before, she can do it again)

MD - Blair and Clark (sadly no one else is at that level)

LD - Emms and Kellogg

MX - spose its gotta be Emms and Robertson....but would be nice to see Clark and Kellogg beat them once.

Singles is the only real debatable events.......the Velodrome has always done Ghaffar well....so wouldn't be surprised to see him in or aroundthe semi's/final!

NOT FAR OFF.......3.5 outta 5 isn't bad!

Got to say very impressed with your mens doubles performance Luncheon, also strong performances from Nate Dogg and Markostar!

Badboy
5th February 2007, 16:32
Luncheon's doubles was awesome! He out did archer and hunt and with a bit of luck could of got to the final! Womens singles was amusing, nice to see Caz doing well and they really should stop announcing Michelle Cheung as the big Olympic hopeful until she starts winning things.
Mens singles was a bit so-so I thought, Raj really disappointed me as he was incredibly boring to watch and until the last rally against Nathan Rice barely played an offensive rally all tournament. If BE expect him to challenge the big boys he really needs to up his aggression in my opinion. Kidd has a bigger smash then all the others and I think this is the main reason he wins nationally, none of the others can put the shuttle down. Ghaffar just rallies and rarely makes that much of an effort to put the shuttle down, Toby Honey is quite aggressive and really quick round court but he doesn't have a big enough smash so ends up having to rally a lot of the time. Nathan Rice I thought probably had the best technique out of all the players certainly at the net but was quite reserved in his attacking a lot of the time though his clip smashes are pretty awesome.
Given a year or two more I think tonksy + dean george could be a really strong partnership as Chris plays a few more imaginative shots then most of the others, a bit like archer + robertson, and Dean really impressed me. Rob Adcock + Robin Middleton could also do really well but they got so worked up in the shouting and aggression that they kind of self destructed against Chris Adcock and Matt Honey. To me the rest of that second layer of doubles pairs under Clark and Blair are all really really good at "basic badminton" but don't seem to have that little bit extra with their shots cus to be fair to archer and hunt, you could see if they were 5 years younger they would of strolled into that final against Clark and Blair as the class of Archer was still there.

Alan,

I actually watched the game Between Beckamn(Surrey) V Chris Gilbert(Kent) No (Surrey) no ( Middlesex) from the other end of the hall. I turned to talk to my friend sitting next to me and when I turned back it was all over.
It reminded me of that film with Nick Cage and vinny Jones what was it Alan, O that was it "Gone in 60 seconds".
It was like watching that fight between Mike Tyson and Frank bruno all over again. Looked good in the knock up but when it started it went down hill from there.

Does anyone know who the coach was that helped Chris Gilbert out in his 90 secs break ?

There were shorter games, some at 21minutes, guess that the way the new scoring goes. You should expect it in the first round if the seeding is correct

What about after the warm up taking your tracksuit off to reveal all. No shorts.
That would be worth a red surely!!

You'd certainly be red when you realised that everyone had just seen the size of your ladybird racket!

Next time you go out for you lunch tricky, you really need to let somebody know.

Not knowing your wherabouts in the forum is a health and safety hazzard, what would we do if there was a fire and nobody could find you?

You've got to think of your fellow colleagues.

Iam telling ya best killing ever seen was Ben Beckman(Surrey) V Chris Gilbert(kent) no (Surrey) no (middlesex).

It must have been an expensive journey for the lad coming from Kent no Surrey no Middlesex all the way up to play for around 20 mins in Manchester and then driving all the way back to kent no Middlesex no surrey.

I think a few in the draw need to stick to satelites before entering the big boyz league.

sorry guys, ive been busy........

In response to your question of which of the pathetic "top 32" would not be in there, and who would replace them, i shall begin.

This is giving each of these players a couple of weeks to remember how to play...

Andy South
Steve Butler
Myself
Richard Doling
Michael Edge
Steve Isaacs
Jonny Parker
Dave Lindley

There are 8 players who with minimal effort would not have 31 other people in the country beat them.
