So I noticed this place was a bit quiet today and decided that the Scottish banter wasnt doing it for most of us.
Who is going to be up north this weekend slugging it out?
Winners, losers movers and shakers...anyone??
Lewisio
9th January 2007, 09:17
I've heard the mens doubles will include:
Harry Wright/Matt Hanson
Chris Roe/Tom Armstrong
Lunchmeat/Adam Smith
So I presume 5 of them will be playing mixed and Harry is probably playing singles.

I predict none of them will win it.

Kimmy's song was fair game after all the abuse she gave me, I warned her many times to calm it and she continued so left me with no choice!!
Who are you playing with this weekend?

I heard a rumour today that Harry isn't going to be playing, or that if he is, he isnt playing the doubles.
I don't know how accurate it is, but I guess until the draw is published its all just speculation.
That being said, there is another pair who no1 has yet considered for the mens... Anyone fancy Knowles and Tuttle? (Not in that sense!!!)
Its only a(nother!) rumour... but they may well be there, and after watching them play at Staffs a few months ago, they look like a decent outfit, and possible wild cards...? Could be dangerous...
Also you usually get Lamb / Mackay down from Scotland for the Lancs as well... They always seem to produce the goods.
Could be an interesting day or 2.
As for Predictions?
Harry to win the Mens singles if he plays... If not, I've no idea who is in it so ill take a stab at Mark Selwood if hes fit.
Mens doubles could be any of the above names, plus Armstrong / Roe or Evans / Smith. Whichever pair is playing well on the day, its too close to call for me, given my lack of any kind of baminton know how.
Mixed - Armstrong / Grant or Evans / Burgess. Again dunno if any of them are playing tho...
Its all so secretive...
Majestic
Disclaimer: All of the above is PURELY speculative... Don't blame me if Harry and Matt turn up!

The rumour mill has hinted that Tom Dunlop is top seed for mens singles. Anyone know if Colin Haughton is playing?
flighty55
11th January 2007, 10:16
Dont think Harry Wright or Tom dunlop will win the singles, my money is on Alan Clarkson who beat Harry in the lancs restricted, in the doubles i would say either Roe/Armstrong or Evans/Smith, should be a good tournament either way.
Bigdog
11th January 2007, 10:39
Is Clarkson even playing singles? He hasn't in most of the other tournaments this season (Doubles and mixed). Agree he may be tough on his own turf - but if he is in all three I reckon Harry or Tom could get the better of him by the final. And if Haughton is playing I think he'd be favorite.
Luncheon
11th January 2007, 12:12
If Haughton plays...he's gotta be hands down favourite.....I reckon he could still win the Nationals if he turned up and played in Feb!

Alan Clarkson hasn't played singles at all this season since beating Harry at the Lancs restricted in the final. In his own words, hes more than happy to let Harry and Tom play singles for Lancs so he can have a break, and I think bearing that in mind since he isn't playing county singles or training himself that much anymore, he probably wont play tournament singles either. Altho there was talk at York of him making a comeback, whether that was just gossip spread by his missus, I don't know.
Also another bit of (semi) news... Scott Webber and Matthew Sprake WILL be playing the doubles event. This may come as news or it may not, but Matt has been out injured for a loooooooooooooong time, and this is his first tournament in nearly a year. In saying that he's been doing a lot of work to get himself up to speed, but one has to wonder if he will be sharp enough, or will have the fitness to last 4 or 5 rounds. Anyway its another wild card in the doubles, and anotehr pair of names to add to an already pretty open field...
If Tom Dunlop is playing then can I change my predictions?
MS
Final - Tom Dunlop vs Mark Selwood
Winner - Dunlop
WS
Helen Davies vs Caroline Westley
Winner - Westley
MD
Final - Knowles / Tuttle vs Smith / Evans
Winners - I wouldnt wanna call it. Whoever is on song that day.
WD
Davies / Renton to reach the final, likewise Pike / Burgess, but only because those are the only 2 pairs i know, and because i can spell all their names! (going of partnerships at york this is!)
XD
Final - Burgess / Evans vs Armstrong / Grant, Unless Higgins and Westley play... In which case it will depend on the seedings, because they can be a handful from what I've seen...
Winner - I've no idea

Majestic- Thanks for the info, do you have any idea who Clarkson is playing doubles with. Im pleased you mentioned Matty Sprake and Scott Webber, Mat is a close friend and has been working non stop since november on regaining his fitness, bearing in mind he didnt expect to be able to do anything until this month he has made amazing progress and i wish him well
Majestic
11th January 2007, 21:31
Yeah Matt has done really well, and credit to the people who have helped him recover so quickly, as well as to him for fighting to get back to full fitness as quickly as possible.
As for Clarkson... I would guess he would be playing with regular partner Nick Hodgson.
While they are a strong pair, I don't think they are in the same threat category as Clarkson / Hird, and I'm not convinced hey have the pedigree to match some of the named pairs in this tourney.
That being said, anythin can happen on the day!
Majestic.

Roe/Armstrong
Knowles/Tuttle - if they're playing
Hanson/Wright
Lamb/Mackay - defending champs
Webber/Sprake
Clarkson/Hodgson
Bins/Liversage
Fearns and partner
plus all the others that as its late I can't think of and when I turn up on saturday and see my draw....I'll go....oh we've got them!
There was also some good youngsters there last year who will have come on again in the last year....e.g.Ellis and Ward.
Could be a good tournament, with some decent badders......I've heard its well over-subscribed!!!!
Majestic
11th January 2007, 23:42
Another bit of goss, apparently Pete Fearns is pulling out, he has injured something. It's only minor apparently (theres that word again) but its significant enough... Probably saving himself for Northumberland Challenger the weekend after.
The Mens Doubles certainly looks like the event of the tournament. So many evenly matched pairs. And you had better not let me down Luncheon... I stuck you in 2 finals cuz I think you can get to both... Don't let me down or my predictions go out the window... you're my banker... my home run! Hehe.
Just had a thought... Depending on if he feels like the trip, It wouldnt' suprise me if Simon Hardcastle pitched up here. If he is thinking of a late push for a nationals spot. Certainly watching him at York, he could do ok there. Then again it depends where he is based, cuz Essex is such a long way "darn sarf"!!
Like you say, Lancs is ALWAYS a big draw... makes for a high standard... Usually. All to play for.
Ill be there Saturday, Ill wear my "Go Chris and Adam" T Shirt...
Good luck everyone who is playing...

I've got plenty of weird nutcase stalker type mates.... Hehe
Bit more news about the Lancs...
Mens Singles
1* Tom Dunlop
2* James Allinson
Plus another name that no1 has yet mentioned... Tony Gibson is in the draw, his first round game is against Tim Cope. Anyone get the feeling that might go on for a while?
Womens Singles
1* Caroline Westley
2* Helen Davies
3/4* Sarah Renton
3/4* Caroline Smith
Again, not 100% confirmed, but I have it on good authority...

Gotta say I'm a little concerned by this post!!!
But I've been advised I need to encourage rather than discourage.....because stalkers who get treated badly by "stalked person" tend to get bitter and twisted.......however you must be pretty twisted to be a luncheon groupie.
So remember these key lessons.......
Everything is about power.....how hard can you whack it!
How many oppositions can you insult.......only in retaliation....if someone does or says something...see how far you can go.
Remember the umpire is the true enemy!!!
and my Yellow Card count is at 4.....so feel free to go for the record.

Binns / Liversage cant really compete with the other pairs listed there...
Theyre not a bad outfit but they don't have the firepower to compete with the other pairs...
That being said they do get around some... I know they were up in northumberland earlier this year... lost to Andy Pound and Steve Carway in 3 ends in either the 1/4rs or the semis, if they reproduce results like that then their ranking wonnt be too bad...

Looking at results from the rest of the season I can see Peter Fearns coming through the bottom half of that draw to play Dunlop or Sellwood or Gibson.
Think that Luncheon is getting it a bit tight hagving Roe in his half of the draw but I always like to see him being stitched up so you cant beat it!!
I do think that BE have to do something about the seedings though. I know that they are leaving the counties to do it themselves but I have seen some very very strange seedings this year anf this has to be the oddest!!
No offence to Mr Butler, but has he ever gotten through the first round of any event?

No offence to Mr Butler, but has he ever gotten through the first round of any event?
Only by walkovers! No offence to him, as he has every right to enter any event but it shows the vagaries of the ranking system that someone can be ranked that high without physically winning a match!
alansd
12th January 2007, 16:18
I totally agree that he should be able to enter any event but seedings are in place to ensure that the best players dont get each other in the first round and this makes a mockery of them.
An ex natinal champion is a reserve but Mr Butler is seeded!! please bring some logic into this!
A similar situation happened at the herts, I put an open entry in and the guy I was supposed to play with pulled out at the last minute. I asked around the people I knew who were there and got someone who is very good. If he had been ranked 1 place higher I couldnt have played since it would supposidly upset the seedings, they wouldnt take into account that I was a no one and so any decent pair would have the sense to play on me!
FutureChamp
12th January 2007, 16:27
No problems with Haughton being a reserve if his entry was late, but unfortunately seedings are done by those who don't know the players. Anyone else should have been seeded ahead of Butler, i agree it is just a mockery with the seedings!

The number of walkovers in the first round is a disgrace and the fact that 2 of the strongest players didnt show up makes a joke of the tournament. I know Tony had some problems with his back so can guess it got worse but for a reserve not to show up is pathetic.
There are some other who have a reputation of buying points. Entering comps but not showing up and he has done it again. Surely a rule change is in order to ensure that this cant happen. Ideally only points for people that actually win games and if that cant happen then only points to those that play. Nothing to those that enter anmd dont show up.
Selwood should win this easy

I over heard that the hampshire rejected Graham Hurrell because his rankign was below that of everyone else.
He played the bournemouth singles and won it and probably didnt play any more so I think counties are just going on ranking. That mightnot be true but itwould explain the stupid draws we see. The fact that an unseeded player won the hants surely raises questions

So lets count.
Is that 7 matches in the first two rounds that didn't play?
Now what about fines?
Majestic
13th January 2007, 08:18
There were 48 in the draw, an 8 didn't turn up (forgot to note down C Haughtons loss as a w/o)
Wonder how many of them WILL get fined...
Wonder how many of the more local players decided not to turn up on the friday when they saw the draw...
Also to bring up the point about seeding once again, If you assume that 1* was expected to win, 2* expected to reach the final, 3/4* to lose in the semis and 5/8* to lose in the quarters, only 3 of the 8 seeds have attained or exceeded their positioning... Just goes to show how messed up the seeding can be. But how do we get around that? Do we seed with common sense only to be accused of bias. If they seed the tournament purely off rankings then there is no way of players accusing them of fixing the draw. I guess...
Dunno what i'm talking about really. It's far too early in the morning for me!

All typed out by my hand, and edited using the handy buttons appearing above, below, and around the text box here.
Filled all the scores in while I was waiting for the mixed final to go on, they made us wait 15 mins! Bah!
Ah well, there were a few good games.. A lot of the players said that the shuttles weren't very helpful in playing long rallies, they tended to bobble... This was especially noticeable off the serve - The shuttle would move up and down slightly before flying how it should... and no, i don't think it was deliberate!!!
All in all though, it was a pretty good day out, and was nice to see a few upsets... Although if the seeding had been better there perhaps wouldn't have been id upsets taking place.
Still... whats next?
Majestic
PS - No titles, but Luncheon did proudly display the Badders.com logo across his green yonex shirt in the final of the mixed!!

Chris Roe posts on here and I think you will find other winners are lurkers even if they dont contribute.
Unlucky Chris, Armstrong and Grant are a very good pair though. No shame in loosing to them.

yes, and id like to point out that I beat chris roe in a doubles on thursday in my first time playing for over a month due to injury! He then did spank me in some other matches and pinged me so much I looked like i was sponsered by ladybird...
Though I am suprised by the results of the womens events and a few in the mens doubles to be honest.

I wouldnt' be admitting that on here badgirl!
And only the elite few pick up ladybird sponsorships from Ladybird, even ladybird himself hasn't made their new image profile this year.
