Interesting article on the BBC website about Squash - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6263365.stm

Synopsis

"Squash is one of those sports the British excel at, but no one seems to pay any attention to. As the country's foremost squash club faces demolition, the sport is weathering a serious image problem"

Sailing and Badminton probably have similar problems. We excel at them internationally yet most people don't know who are best competitors are. Perhaps the BBC could do something about it and start showing less well known sports more often. Lets face it Cricket, Football, Rugby and Tennis get the majority coverage yet England is utterly hopeless at these sports at the moment.

They cover darts, lots of darts. Well done the BBC for promoting a "sport" full of bloated sweaty unfit men throwing an arrow at the wall. Why spend our money covering and promoting the likes of Badminton and Squash when we have darts?

Not as if they can devote airtime to cricket and football anymore is it?

I assume synchonised swimming will gain more airtime in 2012?

I have now graduated from badminton to squash, but as a keen squash player I have to say that watching it on the telly is like watching paint dry. The same can be said for badminton. At least 2 english guys were in the darts final.

I'm a closet darts fan - steady now Chosen One.

I just think it gets too much air time compared to a true sport - like Badminton.

got to go with the Admiral on this one.

Can beat a bit of darts on the telly.

The chosen one was distraught at big bad barney taking the title.

lost a few shillings on that one!

from a personal point of view, I would say one of the biggest problems facing fast moving sports like Badminton and Squash is the ability of television companies to actually capture whats going on.

To the average badders or squash player, watching badders/squash on tv is ok, as you can follow whats happening, you know where the shuttle/ball is, and all is well, but for the masses of uninitiated viewers, they generally have no idea as to who should be standing where, and why. And most importantly, the object which they are concentrating their focus on is sooooo small when transferred to tv, it could easily look like 2-4 people running out in a court/box for fun, take football/rugby/darts/bowls - all sports where the object of focus/concentration for the viewer/tv is generally quite big, and easy to see.

Badminton looks so easy on the TV, especially when the birds are playing - no jumps, no big smashes and in 99% of cases no sex appeal - very dull..!!

Premier League darts is on soon...very exciting!!

In all of the stuff that's been written about David Beckham's move to LA, someone wrote that his biggest problem he and others will have in trying to make soccer really popular in USA is that most games don't have enough goals and that you can have a draw - almost unheard of and unacceptable in American Sport.
They said that for Soccer to be a real success "someone would have to change the rules of the game - and no-one would ever agree to that would they??"".
Consistent with previous views, I would like to offer them the services of a certain man and his gang from Malaysia and some of his followers worldwide, who now have extensive experience in trying such things with another sport - Badminton.
Anything to distract them from screwing up our sport!

Just a quick other query that has left me confused...... The super series....... It is now confining some excellent players to the qualifying rounds, except recently where in the first Malaysia version not enough ladies doubles pairs entered to warrant one. My confusion is that in previous years the All England etc have not opened their doors to the public for the qualifying rounds. So are we expecting excellent players to travel half way round the world, to be put in the qualifying rounds only and therefore to play only in front of coaches and officials ???

A good marketer will tell you that "changing the rules of the game" does not necessarily apply to changing the rules of the sport.

both the brits and the americans like football but they just do it differently...when beckham is in LA, i think he should learn football the american way to assist in cultural exchange

remember to use Nanospeed 9000x for that..but we need to be careful so that it wouldn't be too bloody...just a few drops might be OK
