Congratulations to HKV on beating Rajiv Ouseph. HKV is on my list of people to watch and he is playing very good badminton. Lot's of Danes in this tournament plus some reasonable Japanese, let's see what unfolds.

Admiral I wish you would take my expert comments seriously instead of trying to be smart about them. You have forced me to include a picture of HKV to enlighten you all. Go Denmark,Go!

Thanks for that Mr E.
What about that Linda Sloan?
Did she just tumble the same girl that beat Hughes in Iceland?
(Shes a great mover I hear!)
:D

She did!! 21-19 in the 3rd. What a result!!

Yep. She's not far off at the moment. And still only 17. Wonder if she'll play the European Juniors or not?
Hope Badminton Scotland look after her properly. Her little sister is also a great player but it seems that Panuga Riou is the runaway junior in that age group at the moment.
TheChosenOneReturns!
26th January 2007, 14:56
God, if she's fit and doesn't play European Juniors I can't imagine what is happening north of the border.
Why would you think that?
Markymark
26th January 2007, 15:12
Erm......dunno. Lol. I'm sure she'll play (unless she really wants to help out Glasgow and NS in the final Prem A weekend!).
Would be in with a shout of a medal would have thought. She was a quarter finalist last year, I think beating Eleanor Cox on the way to the quarters.

So would the lad Kieran as well maybe?
Interesting situation is....
Linda is Institue funded, doesn't get picked for Junior Olympics and is medal potential at European Juniors
Kieran is not Institute funded, does get picked for Junior Olympics and is in with a better chance of a medal at the European Juniors?
Whats the thought process here?

think the olympic selection was covered elsewhere. linda should have been in the team but
an english selector was left to make the decision and he of course went with their golden girl
no justification for it
there was no english boys singles player put up so they had to give it to keiron (tho he deserved it)
that meant they could be seen to have a not all english team when there should have been two scots
in the team
how do you work out seedings for european junior expert, surely linda must be in with a shout if she is going. no way on this years results can they justify michelle cheung as a high seed
keiron has done well at junior level but has he any senior results yet? is he in sweden?

They prob use a mix of the EBU junior rankings, and world rankings I would have thought.

I understand that both Scottish players will be seeded just not at No.1.
Markymark
26th January 2007, 17:38
That's fair enough. Linda lost to Chloe in the triangular (albeit from 19-16 up and a dodgy line call!) and she has a higher world ranking.

seems there is too much subjectivity involved
there should be a clear policy laid down in advance so that players
can choose to play designated tournaments to obtain a high seeding
if they desire (e.g. 4or 5 appointed u19 tournaments in the preceding year)
current form should be paramount, but unfortunately as is usually the
case politics will be involved and the powerful nations will get unjustified
places
what is your feelings on this expert and how do you see the seeding working
out in more detail for the home nations

karina jorgenson to get two seeded spots, must improve her chances
sorry expert, only joking. thanks for info, but how can they decide with
no open rankings. hate to think it would be down to political trade offs
and the powers of negotiation
thanks markymark, pretty impressive results - must add weight to her case

Anybody know this new Japanese player?
hkv
28th January 2007, 21:37
He's the reigning asian junior champion and was the top seed for the world juniors in korea. 17 years old and the son of a former world champion in ladies doubles (1977).
He has a big smash and just like every other japanese player he's amazingly fast which is pretty vital to his game as he is playing at a very high speed.

No...i think the selection panel was a mixture of all the national governing bodies...scot..ire..eng..etc so i think it was fair.
i gather that Michelle Cheung got back with a bronze medal?! i wonder whether linda sloan would have been able to match that performance? Heard the girl Cheung beat in team event against malaysia has beaten Wang Yihan (china)and this girl - Wang - has won World junior championships 06, world university championships 06, invitational world cup 06 beating both zhang ning and xie xingfang on the way!!

one of the other chinese qualifer has lost to a peru girl too!! i guess their levels do vary a lot..
i heard...from others..so not sure if true..that these chinese players arent from China but from Sweden...but cos they havent been in sweden for long enough they have to be force to represent china in EBUs still....like that 'chinese' guy Zhang Yi....he's not that good but was from china...if u get what i mean
