Why are they dumbing down our sport??? First the scoring system has to be changed because some people find it hard to understand the concept of only scoring when serving and now to help all those people who don't know the rules or just can't manage to comply with them they have changed the service rules. No longer does "the whole of the head of the racket have to be discernably below the whole of the hand holding it" but instead the shaft has to be pointing down. The original rule was clear and easy to see, what was the point of changing it? Does anyone know if any other rules have been changed before I open my big mouth and criticize someone for other misdemeanors such as flicking their racket backwards and forwards before serving? Am I the only one who gets annoyed that people who have been playing the game for years don't know the rules? :(

Rule 9.1.7 states that it will be a correct service if the movement of the server's racket shall continue forwards from the start of the service (Law 9.2) until the service is delivered (Law 9.3)
Rule 9.2 states Once the players are ready for the service, the first forward movement of the server's racket head shall be the start of the service.
Basically on a back hand serve once a server starts to draw the racket back they must continue with the serve i.e. not draw it back wait for a second and then start the forward movement.

I have an idea, and it is just an idea. With the new rules, the serve becomes more important, so I think its possible this has been taken into account.
Woody - in terms of the serve movement, surely the first statement seems ambiguous, as when moving the racquet backwards, you aren't technically serving and potentially it could be considered as not part of the service movement, on the basis that while moving your racquet away from the shuttle you will never hit it (unless you rotate your arm 360 degrees and serve backwards!).
Put simply, if the rules want you to have one complete movement, forwards and back, when serving then maybe they should say that!

I wouldn't disagree with you on the continuous movement being actually stated but I don't write the wording.
As I understand matters the object is to stop those who serve backhand stopping halfway through the movement with an undue delay i.e. pulling racket head back waiting a second then starting the forward movement. Some players slap the racket against thier body on the backward movement which causes a noise which may distract the receiver. Nothing to stop that of courseprovided the movement forward is immediate.
The receiver should now know that having started the movement backwards the racket head is going to come forward straight away.
Bearing in mind of course that most who serve backhand start with the racket head virtually touching the shuttle and to gain any momentum must withdraw the racket backwards first.
If the racket head is started 6 inches or so behind the shuttle the the racket head need not come backwards first. Therefore it depends upon your particular style of serving.
