A letter to Nathan Robertson

Dear Mr. Nathan Robertson

There may be a chance that you still remember me as I was a line judge in the Quarter-final of All England Badminton Open, when Gail Emms and you were playing against a Chinese pair, Gao Ling-Zheng Bo.

In the second game, during a long rally, Zheng Bo cleared the shuttlecock to the left side of the court and landed exactly on the left side line. I gave it a strait arm signaling ‘in’ to the umpire, something appalling happened after I did my work: you stared and pointed at me with your racket in your hand and said loudly enough for the half of the court to hear ‘that is a Chinese!’

I have been always wondering what did you mean by ‘that is a Chinese!’ Did you mean I made the judgment in preference to the Chinese pair because I am a Chinese? That shuttle landed precisely on the line just in front of my eyes (and also yours), it was undoubtedly an ‘in’. In the following minute, the large screen TV also showed that I gave a right call by replaying the moment when the shuttle touched ground, the umpire also agreed with this judgment.

This is my first time being a line judge, but I always said to myself that there should be no people or countries in my eyes but only that line I am on duty. Your game was not the only one which included Chinese players; I always gave the fact to the umpire without any prejudices or preferences, and this, I believe, can be approved by umpires and match videos.

So did you mean that Chinese people should not be put on the court as line judges of All England Badminton Open? Almost all the line judges on the court were British except me and another Chinese girl, so you are telling me under such a condition, you, a British player surrounded by all these people, were facing an unfair situation?

I think this was because you are too naïve to understand the “Olympic Spirit” of badminton games. What is the usage of line judges? Do you think we are selected out in order to help our own countries’ players to win the game? NO! We were people who vowed to be fair and just for every player, ignoring where are you from or who you are.

In my opinion, England is a country breeds elegant ladies and gentlemen; your partner Gail Emms is such a good example. When I was in China watching your game, people all liked her as she is not only good in playing but also superb in personality. If you can learn a little bit about how to be a nicer person from her, you wound not do and say something like this today.

I do not consider this as a coincidence if someone wanted to say that you always behaved nicely but at that moment you were out of control. In the third game, you smashed the shuttle and it landed outside the baseline, the line judge watching that line gave an ‘out’ signal; almost at the same time the Chinese player Zheng Bo yelled out as he also thought that was an ‘out’. What did you do? You walked up to the umpire and said “Can you tell him to SHUT THE **** UP when the shuttle is close to the line!” What can I say? Can you use an more rude way to express your feeling even if you are right? Plus he definitely did not mean to affect the line judge; people are not as bad as you think, he was releasing his nerves by yelling out loud!

Further more, we line judges knew what were we doing, any influences trying to affect the judgment would be minimized with all our efforts. Both these two incidences showed that you did not trust line judges; you think everyone was doing something against you, and only yourself have the right judgments! Then why do you need line judges? Why do not you play all by yourself and call ‘in’ or ‘out’ as you wish? It is so unprofessional.

Indeed I heard some players also swore when they play bad or thought the line judge was wrong, but they did not swear to people! They might say something such as ‘damn it’ or ‘****’, but I never heard one of them saying words like ‘tell him shut the **** up’ or ‘that is a Chinese/British/Japanese/Malaysian’. They swore because they thought they play badly, you swore because you want to find some excuses: the line judge is not English, the light is shinny, your opponent is doing something affecting the judges, etc, typical behavior of a coward. Cannot you just bravely take the responsibility and blame on your own unreliability?

People who play badminton are usually polite and gentle. Peter Gade, Erricson, Lungard, Bao Chunlai, Tony, Kennith, Gail, Lee Chongwei, Wong Chonghan……The better they play, the nicer their personalities are. In my opinion, you own the personality of a hooligan, you do not trust line judges, you are rude, you are always searching for someone to blame, and I doubt you are an ethic discriminator. Your badminton skill is neither not that well as you think; your smash is as soft as an armature’s even your partner Gail has a more efficient shot. How come you consider yourself as one of the world top players? You are too far away from them.

Best wishes.

Yours sincerely
Line Judge

I can't believe that you think Nathan is not that good and has a personality of a hooligan. The fact is Nathan is World Champion and Olympic Silver medalist, so in my mind thats not good thats amazing. Nathan actually can't smash at the moment as he has an elbow injury which is being operated on this week. So he didn't do too bad taking the winners to 3 ends and loosing closley in the 3rd. Obviously you have never met Nathan as he is the most approachable person I know. So what that he says a few rude words, if people don't show any emotion thats boring and if people show passion thats wrong. Need to realise there is a lot on the line for Nathan, having an operation and being out for while, he needs as many points as possible. Sod being nicey nicey, there is a game to be won.
You have contradicted yourself by saying you should not be rude about people, but what have you done at the end of your post.

nodiggity, I couldn't agree more. Very well said! Nathan is a talented and very clever player who LUCKILY shows some emotion on court. Let's hope his operation goes well and that he can get back on court asap!

I didn't realise how upset the line judges had become until I went outside Nathan's changing room after the match. I agree with the Line Judge, Nathan must apologise to avoid such unseemly behaviour, I nearly lost my camera in the fighting...

very good, but I would have thought after making comments about the admiral being a racist you might be more understanding than to ridicule someone who wanted to make a fair point about them being a victim of apparant racism.
I DO NOT KNOW NATHAN AND AM BY NO MEANS SAYING HE IS BEFORE SOMEONE SUGGESTS THAT IS WHAT I AM GETTING AT. I DIDNT HEAR THE COMMENTS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN MADE

When you are a line judge, you should stick to doing that job and nothing else. What players say in the heat of a match is none of your business and it is not for you to make a judgement about that person. It may be your oppinion based on your interpretation of what went on, but perhaps you should accept that Nathan may well have been on the wrong end of officials decisions many times in the past and it might be his way of dealing with them--my advice would be to keep your oppinion to yourself.

Linesman...U obviously have never played a sport at atop level 2b able 2 come out with sensitive crap like that,linesman/women have the toughest job out there as every player see's the shuttle how they want it 2b....&if u were an experianced linesman u would know that&just shake it off&get on with it.

As for making personal comments on somebody u dont know as a type of revenge well thats just sad "Nathan doesnt have a smash" &"y does nathan think he's a top world class player" jesus mate get a life&may i suggest one that doesnt involve being a line judge if this is how ur going 2 react everytime somebody says something 2 a close call.

ObiWan
13th March 2007, 12:20
Linesman, you seem far too sensitive a soul to be line judging at a major event. As Mark C says,in the heat of battle players see the shuttle as they want to see it and particularly if things aren't going well they will vent their frustration on anyone in their path.If you can't stand the heat.........
To retaliate by criticising Nathan's ability is frankly ludicrous. The man is a world champion, former all england champion, olympic silver medallist and has been one of the top players in his discipline for several years.
Oh,and I HAVE line judged at the All England AND been shouted at by a player who disagreed with my call.Didn't start whining about it on the internet though.
Grow up!!

As a general point ( as I know nothing of Nathan Robertson or exactly what occurred), I think some of the arguments defending the behaviour of top sportsmen are quite flawed. I believe that saying this is what happens in the heat of battle at the top level is an excuse and not a defence. Conducting yourself in an appropriate manner should be quite independent of the level of play or the stakes at hand. Many sportsmen manage to do this throughout their career. For those who don't, it is a reflection of their underlying character not the fact that they are top sportsmen.

As someone who has had many run ins and disagreements with umpires and service judges.....I can honestly say that there is no excuse for abuse.
Heat of the battle.....or passion as I usually call it....doesn't warrant having a go at someone personally.
Especially if they are a volunteer, doing it to help the sport they love.
However on the other hand, if you choose to take the responsibility of authority there are certain negatives attributed to that....if you make a mistake or are perceived to make a mistake....this has major impacts on players games and lives.

I have almost always been sorry for any abuse I've given an umpire, service judge or referee....but if someone on court or in another sport on a pitch....is making errors whilst playing a player has to react....even more so if they are a noisy, passionate etc etc player. Everyone is different.....If an umpire gets the score wrong, I'm more likely to say something than some more controlled players.....but I much prefer watching Nathan get passionate and look like he cares...than if he were to wonder round looking uninterested!

I definitely think the public assault on him in revenge is poor showing.....and then way your letter is written....part ofme thinks its someone causing trouble and you are not a line judge. I also think that if you are.....you should be spoken to by the Line Judges Association...because the better way to handle your issues, would have been to speak to Nathan directly, so he can explain his actions (if any).

I've never spoken to Nathan....and hope he's not bothered by this thread......but because of this...why should he change or apologise for being vocal...maybe use some different words when speaking to a line judge...but hell yeah give Zheng Bo some grief....if the umpire was doing his job....Zheng Bo would already have been warned about influencing line judges! All Chinese do it Zhang Jun was dreadful.....so do many other players!

alansd
13th March 2007, 13:04
well spoken luncheon, I think the critical issue here is that there is a difference between saying a line judge needs to get glasses and that they are cheating because of race.

line_judge
13th March 2007, 13:05
First of all, it is an 'in', this can be checked by the TV replay.

Secondly, Nathan's behaviour is something called abusement, in another word, human right violation. Getting heat up in a game is absolutely not an excuse of doing such things. Just because you get heat up in sports that make you eligialbe to abuse people? NO!

alansd
13th March 2007, 13:07
Englands own nick kidd seems to get quite a bit of stick for doing the same but when you get to the top level if it makes 1 point difference per game then why not give it a shot. Sometimes the close calls go with you sometimes against. I think in the final of the Wimbledon Carl Baxter attempted to do this against knowles. Knowles just laughed it off and called it out but a lot of us who dont have the experience might have been tempted to play a let if it was that close.

Luncheon
13th March 2007, 13:13
agreed line judge, most people aren't seriously likely to agree that sports excuses people to give abuse.
However.....if you're really against what was said and done......don't lower yourself to start abusing people publicly......also don't line judge anymore.
It would be a shame that "if" Nathan said the things you claim he did, that we've lost a volunteer from badminton......BUT.....if you can't handle someone not happy with you're judgement...then you're not the character for authority!
Make a decision, stick to it and ignore everything else.

P.s. Nathan's reaction has nothing to do with the replay or you being right or wrong.....It obviously was to do with what he perceived to be a shuttle landing out and you calling it in. Or he was trying to influence you for next time....so that you gave him the benefit of close calls from that point on....in which case....you need to rise above and ignore it....calling what you see.
I doubt that was the case.....as no English players would use dirty tactics like that!

Why have you posted this letter on an open forum instead of sending it to Nathan personally if you are that upset about it?

i don't think you should have put it on this forum, i don't think it has any validity here and I have just wasted my time reading it.

You should have come on and talked about "an incident" not slated a specific player.

It sounds like a load of kak to me. (Kak may or may not be a swear word, I don't know)

Can we get back to some humour please, like what words do people use on court?

And have actually been heard saying "yer maw hits it harder than that", it's a peach is that one ;)

Shoulda put this in here but there was another at the time :(

I think it's brilliant that a line judge can come on and post smack - sums up their mental attitude

My perspective - if you can't take the hassle don't do the job. Sports are emotional things to participate in, if you are not prepared for outbursts stay home and knit; if you don't have the strength of character to ignore him you shouldn't be there.

If you're that upset do it through the proper channels as i'm sure they already have and they've probably been told to toddle off.

Get over it

Quite good that Nathan let it stand though, shows how he takes comments like that unlike the poster

To people who are against me, I want to say several things:

1.you guys used a lot of words which are much lower than mine in the letter, such as idiot, stupid... I do not mind, I was quite ready when I post the article here.

2. Some say I should send the letter to him rather than post it here, I sent it to him already, I also want people to see what happened at the moment, so I also put it here.

3. I looked for him to confront after match, he disappeared.

4. If you guys were in my chair at the moment, I am very sure you will say different things. Again, words like 'sports is emotional thing...people get heat' are not excuses, emotion of what? You are emotional so you can insult people? This is the same as saying it is ok to rape if you are so in love with a woman!

At last, still I need to thank you all, as my 'mission' has been accomplished, I know some will be against, but all I want is to show his behaviour to other people. You may say I am low too, but I do not care. You may say his behaviour is quite common, but I believe there are always facts, no matter what you guys said for him, what he did could not be hided away.

And by the way, thank you for keeping on attacking me personally, you guys just showed others that you are not that 'high' either.

I am definetly backing you as I am a very angy player and say bd things very often, even to people outside of the court. But I restrict myself to saying things about me and and saying things who come and start chating with me at the end of a hard match (yes it does happen here).

If theese kind of incidents are overlooked it will leav a bad taste to the sport and no player no matter how good is allowed to do that!

I am quite sure he would (if he was as low as you are), but I am not scared at all and I will strike back if that happened (Tell you what, in fact if I can, I would like to show you some of my taekwondo also and teach you a lesson called 'civility':) )

If you would like to read the post again, there is no mention of violence whatsoever! The Admiral was thinking he would have verbally abused you further if you had the balls to confront him!!

The Line Judge I feel as made the point. Some players can be rude if calls go against them. Some officials can also be a little precious and self important looking for ways to be part of the action...The biggest problem for Line Judge is that nobody really cares about them despite the shouting and squealing, of course Nathan is a bad tempered Prima Donna when things aren't going right for him and for Line Judge that is tough luck because he is the world champion. There is no excuse for racist abuse by anyone however and this would have been properly taken up with the umpire and the referee. By going onto Badders and crying about it only weakens the case...

Apparently Nathan is so upset about this controversy he is playing only Mens doubles from now on and Badminton England has released a picture of his new partner, I don't know him personally but I guess he is one of the new up and comings English boys...

This controversy is stopping my full enjoyment of this Swiss Open as it is all that everyone can talk about.

The Line Judge may not realise the hornets nest he/she is stirring! I even hear that the coaching staff might get involved and The Line Judge should know this is definitely not a path to walk down.

Just out of curiosity has anyone watched the game again to see if they can make anyhting out?

I would assume if that many people heard something then a TV mic almost certainly would have!

Since it affected you that much line judge please give me the game and point number becasue you must remember them since it was such an awful life changing moment, just want to check you know :(

Also can you tell us if you have lodged a complaint with the powers that be and any response you have had? I'm sure they will all take somehting like this in a very serious way

And i always thought that martial arts were for defensive purposes only, in fact im quite sure one could be prosecuted if they strike first or defensivley even if they are covered by insurance stating it is ok in certain civilian circumstances so that would only get you into more trouble in the UK since you would be subject to UK law on the matter, if fact becasue of your "training" you would actually have the book thrown at you!

myself
15th March 2007, 01:46
First of all, it is an 'in', this can be checked by the TV replay.

Secondly, Nathan's behaviour is something called abusement, in another word, human right violation. Getting heat up in a game is absolutely not an excuse of doing such things. Just because you get heat up in sports that make you eligialbe to abuse people? NO!

you must work as a football judge to understand how polite the badminton players are!:p

by merely reading this single post, everyone can understand how distorted your mind is:

1 nathan lost that game...that's a fact...all top players either win or loose...and winning and loosing is almost the daily affairs when one participates in a competitive sports...you can't interpret that as pathetic or losers

2 even other people making funs of you does not make nathan pathetic or a looser

frankly speaking, you need to review your ownself or get some help from psychologist to see how distorted your mind is!

People who play badminton are usually polite and gentle. Peter Gade, Erricson, Lungard, Bao Chunlai, Tony, Kennith, Gail, Lee Chongwei, Wong Chonghan……The better they play, the nicer their personalities are. In my opinion, you own the personality of a hooligan, you do not trust line judges, you are rude, you are always searching for someone to blame

Not quite the saint eh - from the semi final reports of the Swiss Open 07. :p

The dane had a good lead, but towards the end a few dubious calls went against him. Peter Gade is not the type to protest, but tonight he started arguing with the umpire. This lead to protests from Chen Jin and the umpire had to work hard to get tempers down. But it seemed to break Peter Gade concentration and he never got back in the game. Chen Jin won the second game 21-19. Peter Gade left the court visibly dissatisfied and stood for a long time talking to coach Morten Frost, using big arm movements.

AND

The Dane, well know for his fair-play spirit, left the game in anger after finally losing 17/21 -19/21.

Well it serves me right for going away for three weeks its taken me most of the day to catch up reading this and other posts.

Firstly I am an an Umpire and a Line Judge and as far as I am concerned the Umpire has enough power and weapons to deal with any abuse aimed at either Court Officials or opponents where ever necessary.

When line judges are briefed before they go on court for their first duty of the day etc part of that briefing is to call it as they see it and look at the Umpire particularly if the player(s) dispute the call or aim abuse at the line judge. It is then down to the Umpire to deal with the incident.

I did not see the incident as referred to at the beginning of this thread so cannot make any comment about it per sae except that you have to be thick skinned to be an official on a court whether that is as an Umpire, Service Judge or Line Judge and if you cannot take some form of criticisim then don't go out on the Court.

What we must remember is that there are rules to govern misbehaviour/ conduct and allow the Court Officials to deal with the matters as they occur. Of course Umpires can now overule a Line Judge if they are convinced the call was incorrect and the service judge can assist with that decision making if necessary.
As a sport we do not want to go down the line of having 'challenges' made where hawkeye has the final say.

Do not under any circumstances allow this wonderful sport deteriorate to that other spectacle whereby players gather round officials and influence them in their decision making.

Players should at all times respect the Court Officials whoever they are but in the heat of the moment things can be said that are not correct and most officials will treat them as being heat of the moment matters and brush it off.

I have just returned from Adelaide Australia where the only badminton I saw was the finals afternoon and was fotunate to linejudge some exciting matches between Malaysians and Singaporeans where Gold medals were at stake and there were some close calls which I had to make. No players queried any calls all afternoon although some of us got lingering looks but thats part of doing the job.

What we musn't lose sight of of course is that all Court Officials are Volunteers.

Line Judge

Hi Mr Line Judge,

Nope its not Nathan, but a county senior player.

I would like to say that as a badminton player playing at an ok standard, when you are in a rally and the shuttle hits the floor your mind says its in and may be it is out (people watching from the side) does not mean you are a cheat or ur not sure of what had happened..
I would like to congratulate both Nathan and Gail for there performance, it has, in my eyes put badminton on the viewers eyes (TV) our sport is really not advertised enough
and to all the line judges / I would like to thank them for ther free time, most of them understand what I am trying to say as they are players themselves.
I live in a different part of uk to Nathen and Gail but I have serious respect and hope they do well in the near future.
