A quick post in respect for Eddie Gibb who passed away suddenly this week.
A longstanding and fine servant of the Scottish Game within many a capacity. Known and liked by many who will be missed greatly, our thoughts are with his family and closest.

Am sorry to hear of Eddie's death. Always had a word for everyone did Eddie, certainly did a lot for Scottish Badmnton, the Juniors and badminton in the Falkirk/Stirling area. Please pass on my condolences to Derek and family. I will let Gary know as he worked closely with him when he was coaching the juniors.

Eddie Gibb was my uncle...
I was just informed tonight (24.01.08) by my mum, that my uncle has suddenly passed away.
My mother is Eddies sister-in-law and also the older sister of my late, lovely, kind auntie Edna (Eddies late wife!), who also passed away too much.
Unfortunately, as I live in Germany, I received this very sad news much later than others.
I am really, really saddened to hear that Eddie is longer with us. I am extremley sad for Tracey and Derek (my cousins), also very sad for Eddies Partner...
My uncle was a great father, husband, and Grandfather, who had a very loving, close relationship with his children and Grandchildren.
Unfortunately I haven't been back to Scotland for many years but I was always kept up with the news via my mother.
Tonight, I asked my mum to pass on my deepest sympathy to Tracy and Derek and Eddies Partner.
Should either of you read this….my thoughts are with you at this very sad time.

Sad to hear of Eddie passing away. To say i'm shocked is an understatement.
Played doubles with Derek for a few years when a junior and spent many a week down in Polmont at the house with Edna and Eddie. Such a great couple, so friendly, and so enthusiastic about the sport. He helped me and Derek get the best of coaching with folk such as Dan Travers and Steve Baddeley and it helped me no end.
My folks also pass on our sincerest condolences as they were good friends with the family as well.
Scottish badminton has lost one of its greatest supporters.

I feel I must raise my sadness regaring an incident at last weeks Scottish National Championships, I do not wish to detract but do feel the urge to highlight.
Ian Brown former past president and current BadmintonScotland Company Secretary was approached on holding a minutes silence at the event. Ian refused citing "It would not be good to set a precedent"
Im glad that certain individuals took it upon themself to announce the memorial silence regardless, in memory of Eddie and Pam two great servants of our game. It is deeply sorrowful that at a point such as this, we are acutley reminded of the frequent small minded and petty behaviour rife at the highest level of our game, more so in this case we are laid witness to a complete lack of basic human respect.

I agree, and feel the need to respond.
Apparently, it was going to distract the players as well...i know for a fact that was not the case, players were more than willing, and every single 1 spoken to thinks it was out of order to disrespect people who have given a lot to the game in Scotland. Disappointing.
It was touching for the umpires and spectators to carry on regardless.

That is an absolute disgrace.
Its typical of the higher echelons of the sport that the death of someone who gave so much to the sport does not receive anything back in recognition. Whats a 1 minute silence (or even applause for that matter)??
I'm not surprised though. W*nk*rs the lot of them.

Quite frankly i can't say i'm surprised by Ian Brown's reaction to a minutes silence tribute. When he ran the Bell's Championship of the Highlands and was an SBU official he and his wife always looked down on the players as something he had stepped on. Another one of the officials who was and sounds like he still is only interested in themselves and self promoting himself.
What's wrong with setting a precedent? This is the National Championships and both Pam and Eddie gave a lot to Scottish Badminton, what is wrong with having some sort of tribute to those who have died in the previous year? Could it be it didn't fit in with the sponsors so it makes Ian Brown look as if he's not in control? Did it upset the officials plans for their cups of teas and cakes with the sponsers?
I wasn't there, and haven't been for some years but good on the umpires, spectators and players for going ahead with the tribute anyway.

Excuse me for sounding ignorant but i don't know who Pam is that is being mentioned here as well.
I would have hoped that the SBU would have grown up and modernised their thinking with the way the game has moved on in the past ten years in Scotland. However, i see from this thread that it hasn't. As Kevin has stated, people are more concerned with theior own interests than the sports which is pretty short sighted in my opinion. This is hindering the sport rather than helping it.
Very poor.
