View Full Version : Luncheon's Blog

Just had to say something about Luncheon's recent blog entry (I think his blogs are great, by the way!).
Umpire is not king. Whether or not something is a double hit, is a little subjective, and it is up to the umpire to call those. If you do call it, (you'll lose the point obviously), and would normally be told by the umpire to keep playing in such circumstances - which of course you can choose to ignore and you might lose rallies that the umpire might not have called against you.
However, it is impossible in some circumstances for the umpire to know if the shuttle has hit you (and the umpire can only call fault if they are sure a fault has been committed). If the shuttle touches you (a definite fault) and the umpire cannot have seen it or does not see it, and you don't call it (which you don't have to), I would think that is distinct from and arguably more dishonest than not calling a shot you think was 'slung' or hit twice (you may not have actually faulted).
Just a thought. :D

Exactly - it might have been. So don't call it! But if it hits you.........

What if it "maybe" hit me, but the umpire didn't call it ?
Who actually calls a "no shot" these days ?
The Chosen One would administer a slap to his partner for that behaviour !!

Maybe hit you is a different issue. I should say that at world class level (and maybe at any level), players wouldn't call it even if they knew it hit them cos that's the umpire's job.
In a match, the umpire should call all lets and faults. But as I say, there are some circumstances where an umpire cannot know if a fault has occurred, the player does know and has to make a choice as to whether they are going to 'fess' up as it were.
I'll leave it up to you to decide what you think you would do.

Players must train very hard to be complete arses at the top level then
I think Luncheon did the right thing by not getting involved in any umpire discussions whilst on court and then apologising to the opponents after the game when the truth came out. However it is truly a shame that players choose to (or are taught to) seize every point they can get regardless of legality rather than winning fair and square (which most players would do anyway if they were skilled enough).
I suppose most players just think "if you cant beat em, join em" which doesn't help.
It probably evens out in the end though...one game you might get calls in your favour, then another you are penalised. No system will ever be perfect. Even with slow-motion cameras, the technology is sometimes questioned...that's the case in tennis still today
