right, i know this has been asked before (i may even have asked it, so point me in the right direction of a thread or two) - but how do you progress in badminton from club, to county to country player? i am 27: between my napoleon complex and my current man-period, I am devising all sorts of plans to get fit and enjoy my sport again........... then possibly march on Belgium, but that's neither here nor there really.

Start with getting some good coaching, decent coaches will cost you 15-20 pound an hour (maybe a little more), but they will be able to rapidly improve your game.
If you see them once a week, you will notice how things start to improve.

Play more, If you want to get to county level, you need to be playing a couple of times a week, against stronger opposition who will push your game on.

Country....well Wales might be different, but at 27 thats a big ask, unless you are willing to train full time.

The Welsh Badminton Union should be able to direct you to a local approved coach, if you find you are not progressing enough, then try someone else, but it will take time to climb the ladder.

Good Luck

I would also try and find out who is in charge of county selections and see if any of them coach, ability is one thing but if the people who run the county set up dont know you exist then you have no chance. Its about who you know as well as how good you are

If you march on the continent count me in, i always wanted a small county of my own although i figured it would probably be in Africa not Europe :)

Lunch is on the money, i think at 27 if you were going to be country you would be already BUT dont let that stop you.

Fitness first!!! get fit to play sport and you might notice if you play a bit less or take a wee break, work on fitness and do skills with a coach then get back into it you will see the gains of the fitness element where you should be stronger and able to last longer in a game without the effects taking their toll.

Cant do it without a good level coach though, if up here you are really looking for advanced level (old system), dont know what that equates to down there though :(

cheers for the advice all - i think i am at that stage when i am thinking, "if I don't do something now, I never will", so i shall attack this with a gusto. fitness is definately an issue...

what about you all? are you general club players or more?

i don't know why i would march on a european country - i speak a little French, it may get me by.... lol! to be honest, i could do with a hot climate - not that I would know what to do when I was there - I am Welsh and I swear we're the only nation to get S.A.D. when the sun comes out!
