Now that we have had the 21 point RPS for basically two seasons - does anyone else think it is about time the handicap system is sorted out ... ?
We have had the ridiculous situation where a local tournament had to be played the old 15 point way as apparently there is only handicap tables for that system .... hardly anyone could remember how to score the old way - and the young ones had never played that scoring either ....
I have been in contact with BadmintonScotland and they tell me that it is up to the IBF to sort this !!

Maybe someone has mocked up some tables for the 21 system that they can share - even if they are not recognised the world over ?

This is the reply I rec'd from BadmintonScotland;

As yet, the BWF have not introduced a formalised handicapping system for the new rally point scoring system. I have attached some thoughts and suggestions which have been put forward by Badminton Scotland officials in the hope that they may help, but as yet I do not have a definitive handicap system I can forward on to you

I take it from the deafening sound of silence that no-one else has been involved in a similar situation - having to play the old 15 point scoring system; as that is the only method where the handicap tables apply ... oh well ....

We did a handicap tournament and just made it up!

handicapping 21's would be fun, headstarts of any size would be much more advantageous, would it be better to handicap by someone starting on minus points ?

what did you do Marky ?

the chosen one handicapped a tournament last week by downing 3 glasses of champagne before the first set. wooooooooooooft.

We gave every individual a score between -7 and 7. Makes it more interesting when you're 10 (-6) down in a set to 21!

To me handicapping should always be making it harder for someone, not making it easier for someone else.

By that I mean, both players should still need to win the minimum amount of points required (in this case 21) and if one is much stronger then so be it, but they have to win 30 points say.

However its a lot harder to cheat on your handicap in badminton as opposed to golf, so the Chosen One suggests we scrap badminton handicapping altogether unless alcohol is involved and then its ok.

I'm playing in a local handicapped cup/tournament this weekend so I'll let you know how it goes! I think our backward county are still using the 15 system so might not be all that useful.

I agree that handicaps should always be minus...otherwise you end up with funny situations where your opponent only needs 5 horrible lucky frame shots to win a game!

I remember last year in the team cup, handicaps weren't given out....everyone just played each other and found out afterwards whether they scored enough points to win! Crazy! and bloody frustrating!!! Thankfully, my team won the cup :D

Handicaps with RPS are the same as traditional scoring only no owe an hand ;) Remember matches are shorter than with the traditional scoring so big positives lead to very short games !! use the same + and - you would have awarded before and it should work OK
