WILTSHIRE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007/08
The 2007/08 Wiltshire Open Championships were held at the Christie Miller Sports Centre, Melksham on Saturday 23rd February 2008. This is a tournament in Badminton England’s Satellite Circuit with the circuit finals taking place in May. Players from as far a field as Cornwall in the west, Kent in the east and Birmingham in the north took part.
The mens singles with 32 players (and 9 reserves) was won by Geoffrey Ball of Avon who beat Martin Ventham of Hampshire in the final. Wiltshire’s Ben Caldwell and Simon Woodhouse both won their first round matches before losing to the eventual finalists in the second round.
The ladies singles had 18 entries and was easily won by Gloucestershire’s former England international, Rebecca Pantaney without losing more than 12 points in any one set. She beat Kelly Mead of Worcestershire in the final.
The mens doubles had an entry of 26 pairs and was won by Ivor Griffiths of Gloucestershire and Jack Molyneux of Surrey who did not lose a set in any of their matches. They beat Chris Evans of Hampshire and Adam Smith of Avon in the final. Wiltshire’s Justin Andrews playing with his Somerset partner, Steve Hulbert reached the semi-final before losing to the eventual winners.
The ladies doubles (15 pairs) saw Sarah Burgess of Hampshire and Rebecca Pantaney beat the Hampshire pairing of Jo Dix and Kelly Holdway in the final. Wiltshire’s Julie Russell playing with her Kent partner, Lydia Henderson Boyle reached the quarter finals.
There were 28 pairs in the mixed doubles which saw a third title for Rebecca Pantaney and a second one for Ivor Griffiths as they combined to beat Adam Smith and Kelly Holdway in a three set final. Justin Andrews playing with the former Wiltshire player now with Warwickshire, Alice Walters reached the quarter finals and both Wiltshire pairings of Sean Locke and Julie Russell and Steve Mapleston and Lisa Turner won their first round matches before going out in the second round.

Mens Singles: Geoffrey Ball (Avon) beat Martin Ventham (Hants) 21–17, 21–17.
Ladies Singles: Rebecca Pantaney (Glos) beat Kelly Mead (Worcs) 21–7, 21-12.
Mens Doubles: Ivor Griffiths (Glos) & Jack Molyneux (Surrey) beat Chris Evans (Hants) & Adam Smith (Avon) 21–13, 21–14.
Ladies Doubles: Sarah Burgess (Hants) & Rebecca Pantaney (Glos) beat Jo Dix & Kelly Holdway (both Hants) 21–7, 21–14.
Mixed Doubles: Ivor Griffiths & Rebecca Pantaney (both Glos) beat Adam Smith (Avon) & Kelly Holdway (Hants) 21–23, 12–16, 21–16.
