Proton Eon Malaysia Open 2003 : PREVIEW

The absence of several top Indonesians has improved the chances of the Malaysian shuttlers to win honours in their home Open tournament.

Taufik Hidayat, who won the Indonesian Open men's singles title in Batam on Sunday, is not taking part in the US$120,000 Malaysian Open, which begins tomorrow at the Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu.

In his absence, Indonesia will bank on Rony Agustinus, Budi Santoso and two juniors Taufiq Akbar Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro. Except for the 19-year-old Sony, who can rise to the occasion on a good day, the other three are not seen as title contenders.

Indonesia’s strength for the four-star tournament was further diluted yesterday with the withdrawal of second seeds and 2000 Malaysian Open men's doubles champions Flandi Limpele-Eng Hian. They have been replaced by Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto.

The other Indonesian pairs in the fray are Candra Wijaya-Halim Haryanto and Sigit Budiarto-Trikus Hariyanto. Although these four players are known for their versatility to pair up with each other, the scratch combinations were unimpressive in the Indonesian Open.

Candra-Halim lost to Thailand's Pramote Teerawiwatana-Tesana Panvisvas in the semi-finals while Sigit-Trikus were beaten by Malaysia's Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng in the third round.

There was another setback to the men's doubles competition with the last-minute withdrawal of Indonesian Open runners-up Pramote-Tesana, who were seeded third in the Malaysian Open.

Malaysia will be aiming to win the men's singles title for the third consecutive time in a row and regain the men's doubles crown after a lapse of six years.

The previous two men's singles champions were Ong Ewe Hock and James Chua while Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock were the doubles winners in 1996.

World Championships runner-up Wong Choong Hann will be Malaysia's best bet in the men's singles. The others national players in the fray are Lee Tsuen Seng, Lee Chong Wei and the Hashim brothers, Roslin and Hafiz.

Choong Hann, who was the runner-up in the 1999 Malaysian Open, said: “My aim is to reach at least the semi-finals. With Taufik out, there is one fewer hurdle to clear. But I will not under-estimate their juniors. China and Denmark also have strong contenders for the title.”

China have world champion Xia Xuanze, Singapore Open winner and Indonesian Open runner-up Chen Hong and youngsters Bao Chunlai and Lin Dan.

Lee Hyun-il is South Korea's trump card while Denmark have Peter Gade-Christensen, Kenneth Jonassen and former world champion Peter Rasmussen.

In the men's doubles, China have put themselves as strong contenders for the title following Sang Yang-Zheng Bo's first-ever victory in the Indonesian Open.

Denmark have world champions Jonas Rasmussen-Lars Paaske while South Korea will bank on the scratch pair of Lee Dong-soo-Kim Dong-moon.

Malaysia will be represented by Singapore and Indonesian Open semi-finalists Chong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng.

Chang Kim Wai, whose partner Hong Chieng Hun is injured, will compete in the Malaysian Open after all. He will team up with Lim Woon Fui, whose partner Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari suffered an ankle injury in training yesterday.

Cheers Freddie but I can only get the draw and no results. The Baofe should keep all these sort of things up-to-date. I can't be the only one that wants to know results asap.

Daniel, the results are being generated at IBF level rather than BA of E so it isn't the BA of E's fault.

For some reason it is difficult for them to update the results in real-time, which is a shame as many other tournaments are now doing this - and ultimately it is quite a simple operation.

I am sure the results will start to filter through shortly.

Thanks Site Support. I appreciate that the IBF is the overall governing body and responsibility for such matters lies with them, however the Baofe could at least write up to date scores and match reports & photos on their website concerning the England team. Surely one of their officials on tour has a laptop?

Would have thought so. Either that or they spent the IT budget on Malaysian women. Surely none of us would ever do that?!

Interesting point....but is it really a good use of a BAofE officials time to post tournament info that is already available elsewhere on the web

Eddie0110
2nd September 2003, 23:16
Yes it would be good use as it would add to the interest of the BAofeE site.

danbelcher
2nd September 2003, 23:31
True John but I see a real opportunity for the Baofe to market itself here, intervews with the players, lots of dynamic photos, get the players made if not household names, then at least names that club badminton players will recognise. I am sure the Baofe would rather the english playing public look up their website for info than surf for others. The web is so important nowadays, people use it for everything and if they could improve their ok site and advertise it loudly around all the clubs, people might just look it up

Impressive progress from the England squad on this tour. Clark/Robertson have moved up a level this year and started to beat top pairs, good wins against Thailand and Malaysian pairs two weeks ago topped by this performance against the Chinese world medalists. Only with Archer/Robertson in 99 have we seen these sort of results in md for a long time. In fact if they had put in these performances at Birmingham they could have been in the semis.

Hallam has proved she is near the front of the pack chasing the chinese and Camilla. Roebuck/Parker/Rayappan seem to be making progress. Only in mens singles do we look as far away as ever, there are no easy matches in that event but Smith had a better performance this week winning a round and getting a respectable score against Hann.

Archer and Kellog are on the way back from injury and once they get direct entry into events could trouble top pairs.

Unfortunately, Anthony and Nathan lost to the Indonesian pairing in 3 sets.
Anthony said that it was disappointing as they had both played well. He also added that the hall was unbelievably hot - the hottest atmosphere he had ever played in.

Lee Chong Wei lost to Chen Hong, 15-9, 15-5. Clearly, Chen Hong was the better player as he has more exposure in international tournaments. His play was more consistent and he made less mistakes compared to Chong Wei in both sets.

Apart from that, Lee Chong Wei looked somewhat tired and i think he is doing quite well to reach this far, considering this is his first major tournament. With some time, proper training and guidance, i believe he can be a key player in the Malaysian Badminton team.

Hi Michael,
Yes, the Malaysian Open was telecast live in Malaysia for all semi-final and final matches. In fact badminton fans are quite fortunate here as most major tournaments in the world are telecast live.
