It may just be a quiet period while some of the younger players start to rise up the rankings. Singles has never been an English strong point and I would put that down to a cultural issue where most clubs don't have court time for singles and the tradition is to play mixed and level doubles.

Excuse my naivety, but didn't we have a competitor (Baddeley) who could match it with one of the greatest (Frost). Surely we were strong then?

Right you are Chris we had a great player in Baddeley. And then there was? Yes we have the odd player who crops up, but other countries churn out player after player after player. Let's hope the next batch of singles players can turn things around.

Not so long ago we did have world class singles players in Hall/Butler/Nielson/Knowles but when these guys gave up we have not had one WORLD CLASS singles player since.

I think the BAofE need a big shake up as we are becoming a laughing stock in the singles arena.

Hall, Butler, and Knowles, I've checked out the World Rankings and they're aren't any higher than today's boys. Or have they won any World Events - Olympics, World Championships, All England. I must confess, to not knowing of Nielson, though. But the other three might have been very good players, especially for England, but not World Class.

When Darren Hall was at his best he won the Danish Open and the European Championship. Stephen Baddeley also won the European. Now while not of the equivalent of the absolute best tournaments if any English player won those tournaments now, they could be described as excellent and near world class.

Nick Yates if I remember was a world class player as well, or don't you remember him Dan.

Its good to see two British players fighting it out in the German Open. Tracy Hallem and Kelly Morgan play in each other in their next matches. Who'll come out top of the British ladies? Will this go some way to decide who'll go to Athens?

Anders Darren and Knowlsey at a number of stages got into the top 15 in the world and had beaten the worlds best in tournaments from time to time. You cant say that about the players today.

I completely agree with the mens singles but the women are doing better Tracey was at No 12 two weeks ago , and now is no.13, Kelly is two places behind her and Julia in the 20s. Kelly & Tracey are doing well...looking at the doubles events (all of them) we are doing pretty well with players inside the top ten and certainly plenty that will qualify for the Olympics..I think we are doing OK in these events

To put the record straight we have had two players in the top ten mens singles rankings, Hall and Knowles.Sadly this was back in the early 90's.Currently we are without any real quality, the last male singles player to get into the top 20 was Richard Vaughan of Wales.
My point is what are the BAof E doing with the money? They have million plus each year, surely they don't put it all into doubles players pockets.
Who is getting the money and why aren't they performing?
Anyone want to take a bet we don't get an English male singles player in the top 25 within the next two years.

When we talk about ranking, when is BA of E going to update their English Rankings lists? Current list is about two months old and since the last update we had several satellite Tournaments etc. Can someone wake them up?

michael, how much of a bet is this? I would suggest that instead of putting your money up via badders.com you offer the same bet to our players. I will put the same amount in as you do, what about £500.00? Then we can see if any of our stars are prepared to take us on for 1000.00 big ones!!
Don't hold your breath for too long.
Seriously though I do agree that the current situation is dire.
