View Full Version : 'Text Speak'

About 18 months ago we had a considerable number of people resorting to 'text speak'. This is now increasing again, and although we don't necessarily discourage people from expressing themselves in their own way, we are getting more and more complaints.

Not only will better English increase the validity of the post it will enable more people to read it as many completely ignore a post that is too hard to read or understand.

Thanks,

I have nothing against using txt speak but it should be used where appropriate. A forum such as this is certainly not the place as there is no requirement to introduce shorthand and it makes it a devil to read and understand, and I would imagine this is the same for all age groups. If you look historically at the threads on this forum you will see that the conversation and flow breaks down when someone introduces shorthand, just an observation.

Thats discrimination! Some of us youngsters may not be able to spell properly especially us who aint been to a good school. You can ask for good english but you cant enforce it otherwise you are clearly discriminating and thats illegal in this country!

This is a casual forum not an english grammer school!

Yeah yeah. Good on you titanium! Sock it to them. They seem to enjoy removing anything they deem unfit - the Plastic Internet Police. And it's just because some of us have a different view and are outspoken.

I had my account removed!!! Why, when there are lots of idiots on this site like the monkey who abuses everyone. Explain that site support? And that's with other users asking for him to be removed! What you scared of? He's been named also!

We'll see if these posts get removed too! Isn't this what happens under a dictatorship?

Please feel free to find another forum that doesn't use English...this one does.

It's not discriminatory, it is called using good manners.

1 I'm a Chinese from Hong Kong and use the Chinese language almost 24 hours a day(including dreaming :D :D hehehe). OK, I post in English. I have "The Oxford Popular English Dictionary" on hand.

2 Even though this is only a casual forum, youngsters(and everyone) should be encouraged to write in proper English or else they will fall into a vicious circle. If one kept on using poor English, one would simply fall victum of oneself. One will lose a chance of practicing and improving. The chance of getting into a "good school"....

3 Youngsters should try to maximize the chance of practicing their English, including posting here.

4 As a Chinese, I fully aware of the key role that English language plays in Worldwide communication. Let's encourage the youngsters instead of helping them to create excuses for non-performing. It's of no good playing weak, right?

Titanium,

site support did not say that all posts with spelling mistakes would be removed, nor would those with bad grammer get deleted. Just those posts that use SMS abbreviations.

good english has not even been stipulated as a requirement. simply that you make the effort to type in english.

and i am sorry but simply using the word "aint" within a clumsy sentance structure does not solidify the impression of bad schooling especially when you follow up with

"You can ask for good english but you cant enforce it otherwise you are clearly discriminating and thats illegal in this country!"

honestly........

dear hisslor,
1) Good observation. Well done. I have to admit that I just jioned very recently and the information in this site is so rich that it really takes time to comprehend.

dear all:
2) I picked that "old post" to reply simply because this topic is very crucial. When I came across to those wrong "accusation", I wanted to make it clear that "trying hard" to write in good English style with good senses will actually help the one who does the writing indeed, besides increasing the readability of the site as a whole. It's a win-win. :)

3) Again, someone might ask: why did you reply to a banned ex-member? please read 2) above.

I've been cycling through steps 2 and 3 non stop for hours.

Step 3 tells me to go to Step 2 to find out why you've replied to an x-member. Yet I keep reading from the start of Step 2 until I get back to Step 3 because the answer to Step 3 is not in Step 2. I think I'm in one of those 'vicious cycles' you described earlier.

Volkine,
You are super! I really love to read your posts. You are really talented in many ways especially your high sense of humour(you know it's not easy to find this talent in this world hehehe :D :D :D ). Please keep up with the quality posts that you are posting with your superior observation!!! Please don't follow your affiliate's route(Vorpulus used his ability in the negative way of expressing, I think). I really want to see more good posts from you again and again and again(victorious cycle). You know: some posts deleted, some thread locked, someone was banned.....!!!

I think you have the ability to become the "super poster" that outperform many "oldbies" in this or the other forums, if you do all your posts in positive and constructive way. :D
Best regards
