My 2 favourite players of all time, singles, are Zhao and Hoyer-Larsen. Watching Zhao annihilating Joko Suprianto in '90(I think) All England final was best display of deception I've ever seen. Sending the World No.4? at the time the wrong way throughout the match was awesome.
Hoyer-Larsen for his achievements, and again his deceptive play, and most importantly, the focus in his eyes.
Oh, and Morten Frost. Watching him in the World Championship in Beijing, losing to Yang Yang, but fighting against the player and the crowd at the same time was inspiring.
kim dong moon and ra kyeung min, for their domination in mixed doubles and their sterling performances in level doubles also
In my opinion Peter Gade is the best player ever togheter with Kim Dong Moon.
Kim Dong Moon, Morten Frost, Park Joo Bong, Ra Kyung Min, Susi Susanti. Ye Zhaoying.
Reckon Lin Dan might make that list if he keeps up his form from this year, but thats one time will tell on.
Mine is Morton Frost for all time and at the moment and ever since ive been playing its been Peter Gade

in agreement with Concerned Player, the 1990 All England was an impressive performance from Zhao Jianhua... thrashing Joko Suprianto 15-3, 15-1, Suprianto being World Champion 3 years later.
When i was growing up playing, my coach at the time showed me loads of footage of Zhao Jianhua, and when i asked at 1st if he was any good...he replied, 'that man is the greatest singles player who ever lived'. on a skill level id have to agree.
Cant agree with Peter Gade being the greatest ever, would say hes amongst a large group just outside, he should have had the World title in 1999, would say Hoyer-Larsen stands out more than him.
Female wise....Ge Fei in womens doubles.
Park Joo Bong and Kim Dong Moon.
not to forget 8 times All England Champion Rudy Hartono, 10 All England Finals, and 8 victories.
Would love to see the Yang Yang v Morton Frost world final, heard Frost was locked out the hall in China and had to prepare outside??? crazy if true.
does anyone know where oyu can get a video of Zhao Jianhua beating Joko Suprianto in the all england final of 1990 because i have heard my coach talking about it too and i would love to see it does anyone have a copy?or know where i could get one?

I own a video of Zhao Jianhua against Joko Suprianto in the All-England final. For me, Zhao was probably the most talented player ever to pick up a racquet. However, this talent became his downfall as he was prone to loss of concentration on numerous occasions.
Peter Gade cannot be regarded as the greatest player of all time, simply for the reason that he has not, and in my opinion will not, win one of the two "big ones", the World Championships or the Olympic Games.
In my opinion, the greatest singles player, or the best i have ever seen, is Sun Jun. With his unique footwork and technique, and his majestic defence, he was untouchable at his best. I forget the year, but the year that he won the All England, he destroyed every player in every round, a complete rarity in top mens singles. He made Ong Ewe Hock look like a novice in the final. Brilliant.
I mentioned Zhao for his raw ability, but another player who i must include in the "stupidly talented" bracket is Taufik Hidayat. I saw him play when he was 14, about 2 foot tall and probably no more than 7 stone in weight. That day, he beat the top under 19 in the world 8 and 2. He skill and balance were something i had never seen before. It was like he played on ice. The best of him is still to come.
For me, 3 players stand out in mens/mixed game: Christian Hadinata, Park Joo Bong and Kim Dong Moon. To choose between these 3 great players would be extremely difficult, all great in their time, and very different in their styles.
what about the greatest female player?
for all round talent in 3 disciplines can you argue against Gillian Gilks?
(so good she was on Question of Sport, i.e. she was famous to the general public)

We should mention Judy Hashman also. Not for nothing did she win 17(?) All England titles.

Not to take anything away from these brilliant players but in their time there were no chinese women in the events and not many far eastern players. They were still very talented but I'm not sure they would have been as successful if the chinese were around.

tosh. they were both greats, the best of the best at the time. Judy Hashman and Gillian Gilks were two of the best badminton players ever.
was Roger Bannister crap because he coudn't run as fast as Hicham El Guerrouj.

i never said anything about them being crap, did i??i actually said they were brilliant players.i was just putting a sensible question through?one of my friends mum's,karen beckman said that she was top in europe but as the chinese were introduced she found it very difficult and they were by far the better players.i was just putting forawrd an argument, don't get in a stress grover.

You can only be measured by the results against your peers. You cannot compete with ghosts nor with future generations.
nobody specific has a point: there is no way you can compare the game prior to 82 to the modern era of world badminton. Since the first china AE womens singles in 82 they have been 21 winners of asian origin and 2 Danish. Prior to that USA and England competed most of the finals. Thats not knocking the achievements of the earlier players, just saying that its pointless to try to compare.

Another aspect to remember is equipment. It is far easier to have an amazing smash with todays racquets.
But you are right a champion can only beat those who attend at the time.
The history books only list the winners not who did not attend etc.
