The best advice I ever received about the backhand clear came from Lee Jae Bok. When you see the shuttle, adjust your stance. Point your racket at the shuttle. Follow the shuttle with your racket watching the shuttle. At the last moment step across with your racket foot and BAM! He makes it look easy!

Still I try to do it like he showed me and my backhand has improved a lot.

If it's for a beginner then a simple way to explain the arm movement is to keep the backhand grip (shortened is probably easier) and from base to step over to just before the shuttle is hit the individual is looking at their watch face, as they hit and follow through they should be looking at the buckle on the strap after the suprination.

I always had a high sucess with teaching the backhand, it just seems to be the explaining and the results are instantaneous and usually a vast improvement.

The one thing I find is that you do have to use a tram line or centre line to give the person a visual reference to see if the clear is straight and this gives them the oppertunity to think about slight grip changes to make the shuttle go straight.

Thank you so simple, I do believe the shot is in the eye of the beholder as you say and is overcomplicated sometimes

to be honest i always played an overhead backhand with a pan handle grip,i found i could generate much more pace than with a normal grip which i found very restrictive.
i could "snap" my wrist far faster with a pan handle.

I am being taught the backhand by the great 'Southern Monkey' and I must say , it has improved considerably albeit at an extremely high cost to my bank balance.

I would recommend the 'monkey' to people that can afford him and who can cope with his sarcasm.

my two penneth - i've been told that hitting the backhand is like swatting a fly, although I tend to swat flies forward - so maybe he meant the 'smash'!!

If I'm forced to do a backhand clear during the point, I will leave the shuttle to land in or out, walk towards my opponent, shake hands, say 'good game' and walk off court. I don't tolerate backhand clears.
