Hi Roger, not sure which deception article you are after. We have one written by Martin Dew-Hattens that was published in February 2003.
It is one of the featured articles under the petition ad in the left column.

At the bottom of the article (final paragraph)it says in the future MDH might find time to write and submit an article on how to teach deception. I think RS is talking about that
Roger Smyth: He does say that he might write about it, and he hasnt yet, so it may not be written yet.

Sorry, just before I go out on the town, but is deception something that can be taught?
To deceive someone in your game you must watch people play and experiment with your shots to see what works and what can't. But more importaintly their reactions!

I have just attended a One Day LIBA Academy course run by Lee Jae Bok and he spent some time working on deception.
I believe It can be coached but like everything it requires practice. If you are lucky enough to have some coaching by a great exponent of deception, like Lee Jae Bok, you can watch and learn a lot.
If you see examples of great deception up close it definitely inspires you to practise. Even watching video clips is good. I recently saw a Peter Gade net shot and have been trying to pull it off at club night for the last couple of weeks.

Stephen - is it the forehand execution of the backhand fake net shot against Gopi chand?

Stephen,
lol, Lee done the 5 shot trick again yeah? I'll get those five back next time.
That Gade shot is famous and i used to be able to do it, but dont as much. However, did anyone see what Jens Eriksen did against Choong Tan Fook in the AE2004 final? That was classic.

Matt,
Sorry mate but I was on the very same LIBA course and I can't remember anyone coming close to getting all five back and winning the racket. Still at least you beat all of us in the singles.
Seriously though, is there a site where I can download the clip of Gade's net shot? I'm pretty sick of everyone telling me how good it was when I haven't actually seen it.

Hi Phil
Yes it's the shot against Gopi. I still haven't managed to pull it off as yet.
Hi Matt
Sounds like you might just give LJB a run for his money on the 5 shot trick now.
Ronald
You can see the Peter Gade video clip at:

By the way Ronald. Did you know LIBA have some courses running in July. Send me a PM and check out the new LIBA UK website. www.libauk.com

Stephen, the shot itself is easy. The problem is the positioning of the body during a game type situation to get the same level of deception.
The only problem is once you have mastered it can you use it more than once or twice? It is no longer deceptive since people are waiting on it.
Ronald what do you mean Matt beat you all in the singles - he's a doubles player ;)

No Ronald, I'm sure Matt is much better than he lets on, by a long way!
Deja-vu setting in here Matt, anyway nice to see you are back on the LIBA courses.
In any case better not offer to play his nan - whitewash!
