View Full Version : Badminton Bonanza at Scotstoun, Glasgow

I travelled up to this Bonanza from Kent and it was worth every penny spent. Great competition and friendly competitors. Did anyone else play in this tournament? and what did you think? PS: Was it you 'Mr McBride' in the black 'badders' t'shirt I saw playing singles??
Phil McBride
27th June 2004, 23:54
Yes, I was having a good time. I especially liked the part of the day where the events were running approx 2 hours late becasue of slight administration difficulties and also because I kept unplugging the PA system so only one name was heard over the speaker system :D
I don't know how many people have seen me coaching and playing in it and have come to this site because of wearing it.
Sponsorship deal site support? ;)

Alas the idea regarding the t'shirt has only just dawned on me because I'm reading the tournament competitor list. I would have said 'hello' if i'd of realised.
Yes the PA bit was a bit funny. I kept getting caught out, they announced me for singles when I was in the middle of my mixed doubles!!? Hey, instead of tinkering, you should have fixed it!! Although a bit out of place in that plush 'new' centre.
BTW, how'd you get away with 'social' when you're a talent - I saw the 'social' standard and thought myself brave entering the 'league' section!?!
Oh well, maybe see you in Edinburgh in September in the 'social' section?!! :)
Phil McBride
28th June 2004, 00:16
My doubles partner is a social player and I had to enter after vowing never to do it again, the funny thing is I never get out of the pools :(
The last guy to win the social singles plays in my club and after he won he was on cloud nine until I wiped the floor with him in 2 straight games
The problem with the organisation (and that one was the best yet) is that you do get called when you are on, the first one I played in Edinburgh I was on playing singles and got called for my second, finished the first went straight on to the second and was called to play the third.
I think the brass have it in for me.
September in Edinburgh is a possibility, it's usually on a Saturday in Meadowbank. The bonus is there is a McDonalds over the road from it and a pub just down the street
There are a few others on this site that were playing, a couple for the first time as well.

aaahh Phil, I watched that game and it was very good.. i found it hard to believe they were 'social' players!! I hope you let him be really happy for a couple of days before stealing his thunder!! McDonald's and public house in the same sentence - hey, this is a family site!!
Phil McBride
5th July 2004, 22:14
We normally go for the McDonalds on the way to the pub, since they started this "doubles in the morning" idea because it always over ran in the afternoon slot and it was keeping people till 8.00-9.00 they changed it to first thing in the morning, oh well it warms you up for the singles in the afternoon.
The main problem is that you have to sit about if you are not playing the mixed and sometimes the wait is about 4 hours :(
The odd thing was when I beat the guy who won the last one he came up to me when he beat me about 2 weeks ago and said "what was different from the last time, you won so easily! I've got a new racket - that must be it"
Some people eh

And what happened to that sponsorship deal site support?

And what about you, you should be playing too
Anyway I thought the Bonanza was good but I think a few rule changes are in order although it would make it an even longer day, In the pools I think more than one person or couple should get throgh as this will allow the best 2 players or couples to compete in the final, rather than it being the luck of the draw, i.e if you are the 2nd best player there and you happen to draw the best player in your pool you are effectively out.....
What do you think phil, you may get a chance to get out the group stage for a change

No I think you have to win all your games to get through, the problem is that even in the "social" leagues there are some sleepers who have either won before and are meant to go into the "league & tournament" section or some people who are just intent on winning at all costs. I think there are far too many free courts at times, the last time I had to wait about 2 hours to get my first doubles called, but I do have to say that this one was the best organised yet.
Normally there are people who get bye's straight into the final, the last guy I played in the singles always seems to be in that group
Other than that the S.B.U. do a great job, sponsorship deal S.B.U. ?
P.S. It looks like I got a bye into the final and got beat of a tournament player:

Your right the SBU do a graet job, but you are effectively saying it is the luck of the draw to get to the final,
And as far as bye's are concerned we need to work harder promoting it for more people to enter

Remeber what I told you...
Sorry........getting old, memory going a bit. Can you please reiterate?
How's the grip going, have you got the Tefal look erased yet....
Well "Tefal" is kind of in fasion at the moment especially if married with Teflon or titanium, since others use those slippy strings in cojunction with the full "tefal" setup, I shall stick with my abraisive brand and try and keep up with the technology and "evolve" to the full "tefal" standard of others, but it's always good being an individual and trying out the whole pronation thing.
Thanks for the interest Ted.

I am still concerned that the anger is coming through in you Phil.
I strongly suggest that you get some help for your anger and the grip.
Look at things in a more positive way Phil and you may improve your standard.

Well you have a very good and pertinant point there Eddy, concern is warranted but unjustified. As far as the anger thing it's usually ok until someone flicks a shuttle at me in a disgruntled fasion but I'm learning to cope with the bad manners of others and see and realise that no everyone has manners, we can't all realise what our actions do to the pstche of others!
As for the grip I'm still working at it and am trying slight variation(s) on each shot to see how they work for me and if they are beneficial in my game (bad though the level is), as others have commented "we live and learn" well those of us that are smart enough do.
Positivity is all well and good but should I be the one who sets realistic goals and achieves them or should I set ones whgich are just beyond my grasp in that elusive search for perfection knowing full well it is beyond my reach?
Any advice Ted?

Phil,
Coming to terms with other peoples behaviour is a cop out.
that just puts the blame on someone else.
You probably won't have any players that will play with soon if this temper rises.
It has something to do with your grip I am sure as you show signs of deep frustration in you.
Just remember Phil Not everyone can have an overhead like mine so chill yourself winston.......
Except that it ain't goin to get better and enjoy the frying pan strokes.
otherwise you might meet an opponent who knows how to throttle you with his frying pan before you do...

Actually coming to terms with other peoples behaviour teaches the individual that he can adapt thought process' and can control the constants and does not need to worry about the vairiables which they have no way of influencing. There is no need to transfer blame to others we should just use that which we can control or you can try to influence in order to modify. No?
There are few who will play with me at the moment, so I'm sure you can join the list of those that are not willing to lend a hand to an eager beginner/intermediate.
Well it is good that you are coming to terms with your overhead, but in order to comand complete control I would suggest spending less and your overheads will diminish and through time you will break even. If you need a loan please get in touch ;)
Throttling someone with a frying pan, how absurd.
When I asked for advice I meant of the relevant sort Ted.
Thanks for trying, I do appreciate the help.
So as I asked earlier, is anyone going to the Bonanza in the N.I.A. ?

Phil,
Ok now it is absurd that one should throttle you.
Funny that as I remember you saying that you would punch someone if they hit the shuttle under the net at you.
So someone else throttling you is now absurd......
Mmm ok maybe you have other problems and issues here that might need tablets to sort out rather than just basic coaching with the grip.
The kid is always here Phil to help and Advise.
And Groner off course your best friend......

Hit the shuttle at me?
Was it not flick it at my feet after a rally in a ignorant and bad mannered way?
Not just my memory that is somewhat waining!
I would expect people to try and hit the shuttle at the body during a game, I always thought it was a valid and good tactic. No?
And leave poor Grover alone.

in answer to YOUR question Phil, I was going to enter the Birmingham NIA tournament but because it's split across two days, I couldn't justify the cost! Anyway, I prefer going to Scotland so will be there in (August), September and October. Slightly non related question - Phil - where in central Glasgow can I play club badminton on a Sunday, Friday or Saturday please? You see I'll be in Glasgow for one Friday evening, all day Sunday and one Saturday evening. Cheers in advance!

Very suspicious indeed. A 'talented player'? I won't ask for further details about that, but he's represented Scotland many times? There's an international competition for the most talented player? That's outrageous.

There is a club in the south side of Glasgow not far from the National Academy where the Bonanza was held, it's Called the Cockburn centre and you'll know the address from where you send your applications to for the Bonanza's. It's just along on Govan Road after the Southern General hospital. So you can't miss it.
Depending where you are staying the travel varies and the best route is probably to get a taxi because the public transport on Sundays sucks big time! Taxi fare should be about £8-10 from the city centre, if you need the number of a private firm get in touch. The club runs from 6.30pm - 9.00pm and has a mix of levels.
At the moment there is nothing on a Friday or Saturday that I know of, Kevin - any input?
I have filled in my application for the Bonanza in Grangemouth and have hitched a lift, wahey :D

Thank you for your response Phil. Kevin has been in touch and helped me out also. I will be staying in Largs so public transport it is. I am quite tolerant and so I'll risk it. I had to use the buses when I went to the Scotstoun tournament and that was fine so I'm quietly confident! ha!ha!
PS: I'm just researching accommodation in Grangemouth and travel to inverness.

I got the times for Sunday trains, dont know about the Friday or Saturday since I have not found a club for you yet :(
Once you get off the train in Glasgow Central you can go out into Union Street and walk across the road and down until you get to the bus stop just at the door of what used to be HMV (now empty, directly across the road is the Rennie Mackintosh Hotel) and get on an Arriva service 23 - Erskine, or 24 - Nethercraigs/Paisley. They take you the direct route to the Cockburn centre, once you are at the main gate of the hospital there is one bus stop about 100m after it, the next one along is outside the sewage works next to the hospital, you will then see a speed camera, get up and the next stop is yours, just before the last corner on Govan Road, walk about 50 metres, take a left onto Bogmoor Place and you'll see the big blue gate. Go in the gate and take a left as you pass the car park and the door is about 10 -20 metres on your left.
