Sean...how is the entry going on this? I noticed that you called the event - Welsh Senior Series.
I pulled this from a vets badminton site. 'Veterans' become 'Seniors' IBF change of title for players over 40 (July 2001) - The IBF have deemed that veterans level badminton will be known as 'Seniors' badminton from next season. All International events will be referred to as Seniors. In the UK, the All England Veterans, the Scottish Open Veterans and the Welsh Masters (if it runs this year) will be known as Seniors. It will be up to the organising body of other tournaments to decide whether or not this terminology is followed. Maybe there could be a little confiusion. Thanks, Site Support |

Thanks for the comment.
I have received a few entries already however as any of the organisers of other events would tell you .... entries seem to arrive at an ever increasing rate as you head towards the closing date ... and a few after the closing date !! As for the WSS (Welsh Senior Series) you would need to speak with the Welsh Badminton Union about the title. In Wales, you have a very successful Junior Shuttle Series (JSS) so I presume they have taken a similiar line. There may be confusion in the use of 'Senior' in WSS although there is no rule stopping it's use for other events. Of interest is the continued use of Veterans and Masters. So now we have 'Seniors', 'Veterans' and 'Masters' to use for the players over 40 ? I personally like the WSS title, and if one is to contact myself or the WBU it is actually open to all ages including players with an age over 40. Given that last year was it's first, I believe the WSS was very successful with (as an example) 77 men in total who entered the singles event alone and 117 mixed entries. As for the players .... plenty of club players get involved which is great to see ... but last year there were also players of the calibre of Paul Le Tocq, Mark Murphy, Stephen Stewart, Vaughn Tovey, Tim Willis, Joe Morgan and James Phillips who played in a few of the series events. Entries have now closed for this event which is being held this Saturday/Sunday at the David Lloyd centre in Cardiff. These events are acknowledged as being one level below the English Satellite tournaments and organised such that the 1st round is done on a group basis.
There has been a good range of entries - both local club players and players from Devon,Guernsey, North Wales and Manchester. Final numbers are: MS 34 Mixed 28 LS 11 MD 30 LS 16 As part of their development plans the Welsh Junior squad players have been encouraged to enter these series of tournaments which is great to see. I would like to thank YC Sports for their sponsorship and Paul Le Tocq from David Lloyd who has been great in getting things organised at the Centre. Regards, Sean Smith |
