NO SCOTLAND TEAM IN MELBOURNE FOR COMMYS
I can confirm that there will be no team playing in the team event at next years Commonwealth Games. On tuesday night the management commitee had a meeting and decided "it was not within the best intersts of BadmintonScotland" to send a team to the games. Therefore there will only be competitors from Scotland in the individual events. Reasons for this decision have been: 1) the team event may tire out players with medal hopes in the individuals; 2) the team will not win a medal.
The desicion was made after the selction panel advised badmintonscotland on what to do. Badmintons future in the institute may be dependant on individual medals being won. Therefore this decision has been driven by a focus on funding. But why does badminton scotland not have funding when they are able to hold large prestigeous events such as the Sudirman Cup in 2007? So from winning a medal at the last games and raising awareness for the sport in scotland to no longer sending a team because they are not going to win a medal. there are no garuantees in sport and to rely on individuals to perform under emmense pressure only lowers the chances of success. It was announced that the head selector felt that this would be a desicion which the majority of players in scotland would approve of. So i put it to the badders panel....do YOU think it is an injustice not to send a team to Melbourne or do you agree that it is in the best interests of scottish badminton. |
I wholeheartedly think this is a disgrace. The Institute has been up and running for a number of years now and if the head selector, who is in charge of badminton in the institute, has not managed to use the available funding to build a team capable of competing at Commonwealth Games level - which is not a very high standard depth wise in comparison to most badminton team events - then surely we have to look at what he is doing wrong. I suspect the answer to that is 'lots' but nobody seems to be doing anything about looking into it at a high enough level.
As far as individual medals go, surely the only ones in with any kind of shout are Susan and/or Rita so they can split the team event singles leaving them potentially less tired than some of the other players who only have one sings player of a level. The only way to ensure continuation of funding is to build depth in the sport and currently only a very select few in Scotland are of any standard. If this continues and teams are withdrawn in this way, firstly there is little for people to aim for and secondly, once those players capable of competing at that level retire or get injured, there is no fall back position as there is nobody to step up and take their place. |
What a disgraceful decision to make.
Yes its a long way to go and yes the Scots may have not won a bronze medal (you have to play a bronze match this time) but not to complete in the event is shameful. What it means is that people who would have got a place to bolster the numbers and shared some of the load wil not get the opportunities to enjoy a fantastic competition and meet many people from all over the world. They may be unlikely to go to the World Championships so this is probably their biggest opportuntiy. You should have seen the team from one of the smallest African countries in Manchester. They had one shirt, one pair of socks each and trainers that came from the Ark but when they saw people with their names printed on the back of their shirts got a felt tip pen and wrote their names on the back of their shirts. They only had two people in their squad (both men) and were very dissapointed to be told they could not participate in the team competition as they did not have any 'ladies' in their team. They still turned up and played in the individuals and got hammered but were grateful for the opportunities to play. Com'on you Scots change your minds its not to late, reverse this decision. |
i think its absolutely shocking

If it's true, it's about time...
The Jocks have been a complete embarrassment at the Commonwealth Games for a good few years now, at last someone is going to put a stop to their humiliation. The Admiral salutes you!! |
They are so poor that is why they hold a bronze medal from the last team event?????

this is a serious post there is no need for irrelavant posts from users wishing to get a reaction. i urge you to vote in the poll even if you believe badmintonscotland have done the right thing. personally i strongly disagree with the actions of badmintonscotland. however your views as the badminton community should be heard

Who is taking it off topic.
I think its the most irrational decision I have seen for a long time not to send a 'team'. |
Woody,
after all this time, as your friend, I have to say it. If you can't say ''anything'' nice. get it? no double negatives, it's silly. |
You should know by now Greg that no one takes any notice of any information or views in this site especially those who you are aiming at!
Ignorance is truly bliss for those with any sway in the game in Scotland, no wonder the dissention in the ranks is getting worse day by day :( Why don't they just send a yong team for the experience and let the others who have "hope" in the individuals play for their funding? Oh and that young team has to be the ones that would not be generally selected by the majority or have won generally every competition they can and have some kind of amazing "potential" that no one else has like the ability to lick arses like there is no tomorrow............... you know the kind of thing  Personally I think the Fu**ers who made that decision should be strung up and left out for the crows! |
