Whilst happily browsing the BBC Sport
website I see new content in the badminton section. Hooray! About time as well.
Nicely timed to coincide with the start of the Olympics. Eager to see what
dynamic and exciting content it contains I press the hyperlink in anticipation.
I am met with "In our latest jargon
guide, we unscramble some common badminton babble to help you on and off the
court". Ok I think, let's see what delights they have for us.
The alarm bells start to ring...
The article entitled 'Badminton banter
explained' in itself was ok but the picture of a badminton player next to a
flying eagle was not.
I read on and a number of thoughts come
to mind. How can they do this to us? How can they be so patronising and yet,
mean so well. The images that accompany the definitions only reinforce all the
stereotypes
associated with the sport - and what someone sliding into a baseball base has
to do with badminton is anybody's guess.
I'll let you make up your own minds

I've included the complaint email
address for the BBC Academy, just in case you have the urge to speak out.
