The Hampshire player finally fell in two tight games 21-17 21-15 to former Yonex All England champion Chen Hong.
But a place in the last eight will maintain his place in the world's top 20 - stands at No. 19 - and put him in good heart for the Denmark Open at the end of this month.
England produced another good quarter-final effort with Robert Blair and Jenny Wallwork, playing together for the first time. They scored two wins on the way to the last eight before falling to He Han Bin and Yu Yang of China 21-16 21-16.
Blair and Wallwork will be among the players taking part in this week's ASICS Sussex National Elite Open at The Dolphin in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, at the weekend as they also prepare for the Denmark Open
