BUDDING badminton boys from Hertfordshire swept the medal board at a national Under-13 tournament in West Sussex.
The
young county side, who train at the Herts Sports Village in Hatfield,
blew the competition out of the water to bring home medals in both the
boys' singles and doubles events last month.
Squad manager Duncan Conway feels the promising group can only get better.
He said: "This is a talented group of players with a lot of potential."
Nicholas
Breakspear pupil Daniel Hatt won the singles title, beating county
team-mate and Mount Grace boy Steven George in the final.
Howard Stobo, a member of the Hatfield-based Comets club, clinched the bronze after losing to Hatt in the semi-finals.
In
the doubles, Stobo teamed up with George to grab the gold, beating
fellow Herts pair Max Hodkinson and Lochinver pupil Mark Sadler, a
member of the Potters Bar-based Gazelles club, in the final.
Under-11
duo Matthew Widdicombe and Sherrardswood schoolboy David Maughan, the
Herts Schools' doubles champions, performed well in the higher age
group to finish in third place after losing to Hodkinson and Sadler in
the semi-final.
In the girls' section, the Under-10 Swifts club
pairing of St Giles Primary pupil Amy George and Little Heath
schoolgirl Isabel Hatt also acquitted themselves well against their
older counterparts in the doubles and separately in the singles.
