Lydia Cheah pulled of a stunning win over women's singles defending champion Julia Wong for the first time in two years to keep alive her hopes of reaching her second final in the Proton National Grand Prix Finals here on Friday.

The 18-year-old Lydia toiled for 46 minutes to beat Julia 14-21, 21-15, 21-13 in her final Group B match.

By emerging as Group B champion, the lanky Lydia avoided an early meeting with national number one Wong Mew Choo in the semi-finals on Saturday.

She will take on Group A runner-up Ooi Swee Wern instead.

Group A champion Mew Choo will square off with Julia in her bid to reach her first final in three years.

She missed out of the action in the last two GP Finals because of injuries.

Lydia attributed her win yesterday to fewer mistakes.

Lydia has also booked herself a place in the women's doubles semi-finals with Woon Khe Wei.
