THE Badminton World Federation (BWF), in a shock move, suspended its Chief Operating Officer (COO) P. Ganga Rao (pic) with immediate effect on Tuesday.

Ganga, who is also the BA of Malaysia (BAM) secretary, has also been barred from entering the BWF secretariat at the Kuala Lumpur BA (KLBA) Stadium in Cheras.

Ganga, who confirmed the suspension, said he received the letter — signed by BWF administration committee chairman Eraj Wijesinghe — yesterday but did not want to elaborate on the charges against him.

"I’ve received the letter and the suspension is with immediate effect. There will be a domestic inquiry on June 29. This involves some legal matters and I do not wish to comment further," said Ganga.

Ganga’s suspension is a shock as he was hand-picked by BWF deputy president Datuk Punch Gunalan as the general manager in January to further strengthen the federation’s administration.
Ganga was then promoted to COO during the All England in March.

It is understood that Ganga will not make the trip to Glasgow, Scotland to attend BWF’s annual general meeting (AGM) which will be held during the Sudirman Cup next week.

It is also understood that Ganga’s next course of action will depend on the outcome of the AGM but it is widely believed that he could seek legal recourse.

Meanwhile, BWF issued a statement on it’s website that Punch will be leading the federation’s administrative arm with full executive responsibilities during the ensuing period.

It was also stated that the BWF council, which met in Kuala Lumpur on May 15, reconfirmed his status as the executive deputy president.
